Long Beach State Falls Short In Overtime Against No. 3 Stanford

Aaron Arias scores four goals as the Beach falls to the Cardinal.

Stanford, Calif. — With 16 seconds remaining in regulation, junior Rafael Real Vergara fired a shot and scored as No. 6 Long Beach State tied the game at 13 to force overtime against No. 3 Stanford on Wednesday night. 

The Cardinal (10-0) scored twice in overtime to take the 15-14 victory ending the Beach's comeback attempt.

Aaron Arias was stellar for the LBSU (8-2) scoring four goals as he made four of his six shots on the night. 

Early in the first period the Beach was called for seven exclusions and the Cardinal took advantage as they took a 5-3 lead after the first period.

In the third period, the Beach was able to convert on their power plays as they outscored the Cardinal 3-2 to trail 7-6 at halftime.

Arias tied the game up early in the third and Theodoros Pateros gave the Beach a 8-7 lead to cap a 4-0 run for the Long Beach State.

The Cardinal responded with a 3-0 run of their own to take a 10-8 lead with 3:15 left in the third. 

In the last period of regulation the Beach outscored Stanford 4-1 to force overtime. 

Stanford's Beck Jurasius scored four goals to help lead the Cardinal to victory. 

For the Beach, Real Vergara and Morris each scored a hat trick for the Beach. 

Long Beach State will now head to Berkeley to compete in the MPSF Tournament. The Beach will open play against No. 11 San Jose State.
