Richard Sherman remains a free agent, but interest in him has picked up recently. Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Richard Sherman was released by the San Francisco 49ers in February of this year and has yet to be picked up by any other teams.

In the months since, he has been embroiled in a variety of unfortunate legal entanglements. The combination of that, him being 33 years old and the fact that he was coming off the least productive season of his pro career made him something of an unappetizing acquisition in the eyes of most front offices.

The tide may be turning, though.

This week, news emerged that three teams were taking a serious look at potentially adding Sherman.

According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have all inquired to some degree about adding the future Hall of Famer.

Between the Niners losing Jason Verrett and Sean Murphy-Bunting being out indefinitely for Tampa Bay, those two teams in particular have a need for someone with Sherman’s unique skill set.

Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians offered  brief thoughts on the matter this week.

“We’ll talk and see, and if it’s the right fit, it’s the right fit. And we’ll move on it,” he said to the media.

Seahawks head coach, Pete Carroll, seemed less enthusiastic about something getting done. During an interview with 710 ESPN Seattle, he described the status of possible negotiations with Sherman as “nothing right now.” At the moment, the front office is likely much more focused on its rapidly increasing internal drama than possible add-ons.

Same goes for the 49ers.

Obviously Sherman is on the wrong side of 30 and comes with a lot of baggage, but he was incredible in 2019 with the Niners. Yes, injuries cut his 2020 campaign short, but if he has something left in the tank, he cold be a huge pickup for a Super Bowl contender.
