Here’s how to find broadcast of Aztecs football game against Towson

Watching the broadcast of San Diego State’s football game this weekend against Towson will be more involved than turning on the television and clicking a button or two on the remote control.

A little patience is advised, especially for the technologically challenged in the crowd, although locating the broadcast should be easier — and the stream more reliable — than in previous instances over the past five seasons.

The Aztecs (3-0) play Towson (1-2), the only FCS opponent on the schedule, at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Carson’s Dignity Health Sports Park.

The game is being streamed by Stadium, which is among the Mountain West’s broadcast partners.

CBS Sports Network and Fox are the MW’s primary partners. Both passed on this game, which is what gave Stadium the opportunity to show it.

Fans who want to view the game can do so online by going to the Mountain West website — themw.com — scroll over SPORTS on the menu bar, go to football and click on schedule.

This week’s schedule comes up. To the right of the Towson-San Diego State game is the word Stadium underlined. Clicking on that link goes directly to the game broadcast.

There are various other ways to locate the game. For instance, those with Samsung smart TVs can find it by going to Samsung TV Plus.

Other sources include: Stadium Mobile App, YouTube TV, The Roku Channel, Fubo TV, Sling Orange and Sling Blue, Xumo, STIRR Mobile App, PLEX and MOBITV.

Some of those options will allow watching directly on a TV. Others involve bringing the game up on a laptop or cell phone, where it can be swapped to a smart TV, if so desired.

While there’s no guaranteeing a glitch-free game, online broadcasts have significantly improved since streaming started a few years ago.

In 2019, fans didn’t get to see the final six minutes of SDSU’s 27-17 win at San Jose State. The Facebook broadcast froze with the Aztecs leading 27-10.

“It’s an evolving technology, but it is the technology of the future,” SDSU AD John David Wicker said at the time. “I enjoy watching games on my phone as I’m walking around or working in the house or doing whatever. ... It is the future and with the future you’re going to have growing pains.”

In SDSU’s 2017 season opener, the Facebook Live stream was choppy and froze at times, making it almost unwatchable for those trying to follow the Aztecs’ 38-17 victory over UC Davis.

Once the Aztecs begin Mountain West play on Oct. 9, five of their eight remaining games will be broadcast by CBSSN, two by a Fox network TBD and the Nov. 26 finale against Boise State by CBS.

Notes

SDSU running back Greg Bell ranks fourth in the nation with 405 rushing yards through three games. Bell trails only Michigan State’s Kenneth Walker III (493), Memphis’ Brandon Thomas (421) and Michigan’s Blake Corum (407).

The Aztecs rank 14th in the nation in total rushing yards with 244.7 yards a game. SDSU’s defense is allowing only 56.3 yards a game, which ranks eighth in the country.

• After collecting only 44 passing yards against Utah, SDSU dropped to 125th in the nation (out of 130 teams) in passing with 101 yards a game.

• A victory over Towson would give SDSU its second 4-0 start in the past 40 years. The Aztecs opened the 2017 season 6-0 before a 31-14 home loss to Boise State. SDSU has three other 3-0 starts in the past decade (in 2011, 2016 and 2019).

• According to Pro Football Focus, senior left tackle Zach Thomas is the top-rated offensive line blocker in the nation (minimum 90 snaps), grading out at 94.0. Thomas has not allowed a quarterback hit or sack or been flagged for a penalty in 202 snaps.

• Junior Matt Araiza ranks first in the nation in punting with a 53.8-yard average on 25 punts.

• Since the 2014 season, SDSU leads the nation in kickoff returns for a touchdown (13) and interceptions (118).

• Jordan Byrd‘s 100-yard kickoff return for a TD against Utah was the eighth 100-yard return in school history. Rashaad Penny has four of them (along with returns of 99, 97 and 93 yards).
