1. Judge rules city can go forward with DOE vaccine mandate

A judge this afternoon ruled that the city's requirement that Department of Education employees get the COVID-19 vaccine can move forward for now.

The mandate requires all teachers and staff to get at least one dose of the vaccine by next Monday.

2. Another Department of Correction detainee dies

A Department of Correction detainee was pronounced dead this morning, the 12th person to die while in the department's custody this year.

The department said Stephen Khadu, 34, was removed from the Vernon C. Bain Center — a floating jail facility across from Rikers Island in the Bronx — and taken to Lincoln Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The circumstances of the case are not yet clear.

Experts say the COVID-19 vaccines offer strong protection — even against the highly contagious delta variant, which has driven a recent surge in COVID-19 cases — but recent studies have found that protection may wane over time.

4. Unvaccinated health care workers fear unknown as deadline to show proof approaches

Northwell Health is requiring all employees to have the first dose of their COVID-19 vaccine by Monday. If employees fail to comply, they will face adverse action up to termination.

When the coronavirus pandemic hit New York City in the spring of 2020, everyone’s life and job drastically changed. For small fashion designers who needed to find a way to stay afloat, that meant making a new accessory that everyone would need to save lives: face masks.

But now, without a state mask mandate, and many people already having stockpiles of masks, fashion designers are relying less on face covering sales and starting to step away from masks to work on new or pre-pandemic projects.
