GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – (KREX) What once was a uranium site is now Grand Junction’s popular Las Colonias Park, but making that change was no easy task.
The Environmental Protection Agency recognized Las Colonias Park clean up team’s efforts with the Excellence in Site Reuse award.
The Las Colonias Park area has gone through many transitions to get where it is today.
Las Colonias Park is well known for its river front access, skate park, often sold-out amphitheater and soon a zipline trail.
Back in 1950, the space was known as the Climax Uranium Mill, flash forward to 1992 riverfront construction began, by 1997 the uranium mill site was almost completely gone. In 2013 a park phasing plan was drawn.
Many local government officials were honored in todays award ceremony for their dedication and part in developing Las Colonias Park.
