Man fatally shot 35-year-old N.J. resident, carjacked another victim, prosecutor says

Rondell Gray, 40

A Passaic County man, who previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter, was charged with fatally shooting a man in Paterson, authorities said Wednesday.

Rondell Gray, 40, of North Haledon, faces charges of murder and weapons offenses in the Aug. 31 slaying of 35-year-old Anthony McNeal, according to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes.

Police found McNeal shot on the sidewalk around 8 p.m. on Union Avenue, near Jasper Street, where the city resident died, authorities said.

“The subsequent investigation revealed that Gray was the individual responsible for the murder of Mr. McNeal and the carjacking of a separate victim following the murder,” the prosecutor said.

Gray was arrested Sept. 13 in Brooklyn following an “intense search” by Paterson police, prosecutor’s office detectives, members of the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force and special agents of the U.S. Secret Service, Valdes and police Chief Ibrahim Baycora said in a joint statement.

He waived extradition and was returned to New Jersey on Tuesday, according to Valdes, who said prosecutors were seeking to have Gray remain in custody ahead of trial.

Gray was released from state prison in October 2020, state Department of Corrections records show. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 2017, according to court records.

Attorney information for Gray was not immediately available. Prosecutors have not commented on a possible motive for the shooting.
