All street signs in the City of Warwick are under review, to weed out the ones that aren't supposed to be there.
Maybe you've seen some? They don't look quite right or make sense.
It turns out, some of the "No Parking" signs are the do-it-yourself kind.
Nowhere else on Lakedell Drive in the Potowomut section of Warwick is there a sign that says "No Parking Either Side", except for in front of one house.
Mayor Frank Picozzi says some residents complained about it.
"Actually, they're area residents," Picozzi said. "So, we started looking into it, started investigating it, and it is quite a problem in the city. They wanted guests to park, and they questioned the no-parking signs."
The city is trying to wrap its arms around what signs are supposed to be or should be posted, versus those put up by residents who just don't want visitors crowding their property.
Aaron O’Brien Mackisey, the Warwick Mayor’s Executive Aide explained, “we're starting with all the signs that we know are legal, and we're putting those in one pile. Then we have a list of all the signs that were replaced by the Report of Public Safety, and we're putting those in another pile. And we're taking that second pile, and we're having traffic studies done to decide if we want to keep them there based on public safety, or access to the shoreline, or if we want to have those taken down.”
If it turns out a sign is not legitimate by ordinance, but the neighbors feel it should be, the case needs to be made to your local councilperson.
It's mostly coastal sections of the city, Potowomut, Oakland Beach, Conimicut, and Governor Francis neighborhoods that draw crowds that want to be near Narragansett Bay, that are initially getting the inspection.
Once finalized by ordinance, illegitimate signs will be removed, and if warranted for safety, like the single lane dead end of Overlook Drive, fresh signs will be installed.
Bob Donaldson, a Potowomut neighborhood resident, says “every once in a while, we have visitors, and if we have a party or something, people are worried about parking when they're visiting, because of the signs. So if it's not a legitimate sign, well then they can park worry-free.”
The mayor adds “Warwick has 2,000 roads, so it's going to take some time.”
2000 roads spanning 600 miles.
