Gunman robs Applebee’s: University Heights Police Blotter

An off-duty officer watched as a man, 19, carried a street sign and its pole into a Warrensville Center Road home. On-duty officers were called to the scene and arrested the man for stealing government property.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio

Aggravated robbery: Cedar Road

At 12:20 a.m. Sept. 19, an employee of Applebee’s, 14020 Cedar Road, reported that the restaurant was being robbed at gunpoint and that the suspect was still in the building.

In addition to University Heights police, officers from South Euclid and Cleveland Heights responded and secured the building, making sure everyone got out safely. By the time police arrived, however, the suspect had left.

The suspect had approached Applebee’s employees who were on break outside behind the building. Showing his gun, the suspect demanded money and forced the employees inside. The manager gave the suspect a metal box containing petty cash.

The suspect, who wore a hooded sweatshirt and mask, fled out the back kitchen door. Police were unable to find the suspect. The detective bureau is investigating.

Menacing: Tyndall Road

At 10 p.m. Sept. 13, a man reported that his former girlfriend, 17, of University Heights, was sending him death threats via text messages. The police report was forwarded to the county’s juvenile court.

Property damage: Fenwick Road

At 7:25 a.m. Sept. 15, police were notified about graffiti painted on a restroom wall at Walter Stinson Park, 2301 Fenwick Road.

Sexual imposition: South Belvoir Boulevard

At 6:40 p.m. Sept. 15, police were dispatched to Bellefaire Academy, 2575 S. Belvoir Blvd., on a report of an incident involving two juveniles. The person who called in the report stated that their child had been inappropriately touched by another student. Police are investigating.

Burglary: John Carroll Boulevard

At 1:50 p.m. Sept. 17, John Carroll University police reported that sometime between Aug 7 and 8, someone entered the Lombardo Student Center and attempted to open a safe. JCUPD also reported that, sometime on Aug. 15, someone forced entry into the campus’ Bennett Hall. Police are investigating.

Disturbing the peace: Warrensville Center Road

At 11:50 p.m. Sept. 17, a resident reported that a loud party was taking place at a home. Police located the home and cited its resident, a Sylvania, Ohio, man, 22, for disturbing the peace. Partygoers were sent on their way.

Fleeing and eluding: Cedar Road

At 12:55 a.m. Sept. 18, an officer attempted to stop a Lexus due to a traffic offense. The driver, however, did not stop. The car was found, shortly after, on its side at the intersection of Cedar and Cranston roads. After the car rolled onto its side, the driver was able to run from the scene. An investigation is pending.

Underage alcohol possession: Warrensville Center Road

At 11:50 p.m. Sept. 18, an officer was parked on Warrensville Center Road near Hillbrook Road when a Bay Village man, 20, walked up to the cruiser’s passenger side and began yelling about losing his friends on the street.

As the man did so, he waved his hand, which held an open can of beer. Police cited the man for underage possession of alcohol.

Theft of government property: Warrensville Center Road

At 3:15 a.m. Sept. 19, an off-duty police officer watched as a man carried a city sign and post into a Warrensville Center Road home. The officer contacted on-duty officers, who went to the home and recovered the sign.

Police charged the man, 19, with theft, obstructing official business, criminal mischief and underage prohibitions. The man was released to the custody of John Carroll University police.

OVI: Silsby Road

At 10:40 p.m. Sept. 19, an officer on foot patrol at Walter Stinson Park saw a car drive through a stop sign on Silsby Road eastbound at Fenwick Road. The car was traveling at a high rate of speed.

Officers were near their vehicles and were able to get in their cruisers and quickly get behind the driver at Silsby and Warrensville Center roads. The driver then drove through another stop sign at Silsby and Miramar Boulevard.

Police stopped the car and charged the driver, a University Heights man, 52, who was found to be intoxicated, with OVI.
