Teen arrested in stolen car, connected to burglaries near SU’s South Campus, police say

Syracuse, N.Y. — An unidentified 17-year-old was arrested Wednesday while driving a stolen vehicle away from the scene of a burglary near Syracuse University’s South Campus, police said.

Department of Public Safety officers responded to the reported burglary just after 3 a.m. in the 100 block of Lambreth Lane, according to a statement from the department.

The 17-year-old was seen by officers driving car, that was later determined to be stolen from the 100 block of Small Road, campus police said. Officers stopped the vehicle on East Colvin Street and it was determined the teenager had stolen the keys to the vehicle when burglarizing a South Campus apartment, campus police said.

Syracuse police later arrested the teenager, campus police said. The teenager has no affiliation with the university, they said.

He was charged with second-degree burglary, fourth-degree grand larceny, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, third-degree unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and second-degree criminal impersonation, they said.

The teenager is believed to be connected to several other burglaries in the area, campus police said.

On Sunday morning, a group of teens tried to break into apartments, threw rocks at windows and fired a gunshot into the air on the university’s South Campus, police said.

Just before 1 a.m., students living at the University Village Apartments on Small Road near West Colvin Street confronted the group of eight young teens as they tried several door handles, police said.

A Syracuse police spokesperson was not immediately available to comment on the arrest or the robberies.

Campus police ask anyone with information about the burglaries to call the Syracuse University Department of Public Safety at 315-443-2224.
