Dan Geriot was promoted to head coach of the G League's Cleveland Charge Wednesday after spending the previous six seasons with the Cavaliers.

Geriot, who led the Richmond Spiders to two NCAA Tournament appearances during his college career, was hired as a Cavs assistant in 2019-20. Among his duties was working with the Cavs’ frontcourt players.

A native of Springfield, Pennsylvania, Geriot spent the 2015-16 Cavs championship season as a seasonal video coordinator and moved up to assistant video coordinator/coaching assistant the following year. Geriot has also coached at Princeton (2011-13) and Campbell (2013-15) universities.

Moving from Canton, the Charge will play at Cleveland State University’s Wolstein Center in 2021-22.

“During his tenure with the Cavaliers, Dan displayed a unique ability to build strong relationships with players and assisted with their overall development both on and off the court,” Charge General Manager Brendon Yu said in a statement. “I’m confident that he will be able to bring that same passion and commitment to the Charge.”

Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff said Geriot has shown potential as he’s moved up the coaching ladder.

“His work ethic and commitment to the organization confirms his desire to coach the game at the highest levels of competition,” Bickerstaff said in a statement. “The continuity this move provides also creates a seamless transition across the entirety of our player development program here in Cleveland between the Charge and the Cavaliers. I’m looking forward to watching Dan help those young men achieve their basketball goals.”

Cavs officially announce signing of guard Denzel Valentine

The Cavs officially announced the signing of guard Denzel Valentine, the 14th overall pick of the Chicago Bulls out of Michigan State in 2016.

Valentine received a two-year contract with the first year partially guaranteed.

Valentine, 27, spent five years in Chicago, and his 342 3-pointers rank 13th in franchise history. His best season came in 2017-18, when he played in 77 games (37 starts) and set career-highs in points (10.2), rebounds (5.1), assists (3.2), field goal percentage (.417) and 3-point percentage (.386).

Valentine underwent reconstructive ankle surgery in November 2018 that cost him all of the 2018-19 season.
