Offensive, Defensive Players of the Week in all 15 girls soccer conferences, Sept. 22

The second week of girls soccer action featured standout performances across New Jersey.

Each week, NJ Advance Media will select Players of the Week in every conference on both offense and defense, highlighting the best individual efforts around the state. This includes forwards, midfielders, defenders and goalkeepers.

These selections are made from games played between Wednesday, Sept. 15, and Tuesday, Sept. 21. The decisions are ours to make, but feel free to send any nominations to the email address listed below. Here are the Players of the Week for Sept. 22:

Big North Conference

Forward: Maggie Blum, DePaul, Jr.

Blum scored the game-winning goal in double overtime as DePaul picked up a 3-2 win over Immaculate Heart last weekend. Jasmine Ouatu helped push that game into extra time with a goal and assist during regulation.

Midfielder: Isabella Gomez, Mahwah, Sr.

The UConn commit played a leading role this past week, starting with a win over Ridgefield Park. Gomez had a goal and sent out two assists in that game. The senior also controlled the midfield as Mahwah stayed with DePaul for 100 minutes in a scoreless tie.

Defender: Lily Johnson, Ridgewood, Sr.

Johnson was one of the centerpieces on defense this past week as Ridgewood recorded back-to-back shutouts. Ridgewood beat Passias Tech, 4-0, and then came out and knocked off Paramus, 3-0. Paisley Tornatore also played well with 10 saves.

Goalkeeper: Sarah Mantilla, Fair Lawn, Sr.

The senior made 28 saves as Fair Lawn earned a draw with unbeaten Wayne Hills. Michelle Mercado and Ryan Meerholz also helped keep Fair Lawn in that game with a goal apiece. With the way Wayne Hills has been playing, that final result was impressive for Fair Lawn.

Burlington County Scholastic League

Forward: Safiatu Kolliegbo, Westampton Tech, Jr.

Kolliegbo has been on a tear this week, scoring four goals and sending out four assists. The junior is putting together a breakout year and if she keeps up this pace, it’s going to be a big year for the junior. Westampton Tech is on a four-game winning streak.

Midfielder: Logan Shaw, Rancocas Valley, Sr.

Shaw has stepped up in the midfield this season and just put together a great week. The senior came up with four assists and helped control the pace of the game in the midfield. Shaw sent out two assists in wins over Delran and Egg Harbor.

Defender: Georgia Boberg, Bordentown, Sr.

The senior was part of a defensive effort in the last week that led to back-to-back shutouts. Bordentown picked up a 1-0 win over Pemberton and then added a 5-0 victory over New Egypt. Boberg came through with an assist in that win against New Egypt.

Goalkeeper: Sophia Mannino, Burlington Township, Sr.

Mannino made a jaw-dropping 18 saves as Burlington Township came through with a 2-1 win over Moorestown. The Falcons needed every single one of those saves in order to pull out the win. Each stop down the stretch was even more important in a one-goal game.

Cape-Atlantic League

Forward: Olivia Giordano, Millville, Sr.

Giordano is the program’s all-time leading scorer and her ability to pop on offense is unique. The senior has scored seven times in the last week for undefeated Millville. Giordano now has 55 career goals and she’s going to be hard to stop this season.

Midfielder: Olivia Sgrignioli, Middle Township, So.

Sgrignioli came up with a goal and an assist as Middle Township got the best of Holy Spirit, 3-2. The sophomore got the assist on Ciara DiMauro’s goal in the second half that proved to be the game-winner. DiMauro finished that game with a goal and two assists.

Defender: Erin Owens, Oakcrest, Sr.

The senior helped Oakcrest win its first game of the season this week in a 4-0 shutout against Buena. Senior keeper Gabrielle Gibson has also been coming up with some big plays this fall and already has 101 saves for the South Jersey squad.

Goalkeeper: Emma Peretti, Hammonton, Jr.

The junior came up with back-to-back games with double-digit saves. Perertti stopped 14 saves against Vineland and then came back out and made 10 stops vs. Delsea.

Colonial Conference

Forward: Remi Newcomb, West Deptford, Sr.

The senior has played well against some of the best teams in this conference. Newcomb scored in a win over Haddon Township and also had goals in tight games with Haddon Heights and Sterling. The senior is one of the top playmakers down in South Jersey.

Midfielder: Maya Berringer, Gloucester, So.

Berringer ripped in four goals this week in a win over Woodbury and also had a score against Paulsboro. The sophomore has taken over as the one of the top scorers for this club.

Defender: Cadance Bell, Collingswood, So.

Collingswood has won its last four games, giving up just one goal during that stretch. Bell is one of the top playmakers on that back line. The defense has put Collingswood in a great spot and if it keeps playing this way, the South Jersey squad will be tough to beat.

Goalkeeper: Alexis Hatfield, Sterling, Sr.

The senior stepped up this week to help Sterling extend its undefeated start to the season. Hatfield made seven saves in a shutout win over Haddon Township and then stopped eight shots in a 1-0 win over Haddonfield. The senior continued that defensive streak with seven saves in a one-goal win against West Deptford. Sterling continues to prove that it is the top team in this conference with each win it collects this fall.

Colonial Valley Conference

Forward: Sophie Berman, Robbinsville, Sr.

The Washington and Lee commit scored four goals in a win over West Windsor-Plainsboro South. Berman was sensational at the end of last season and the senior is back on the scoring pace that made her so impactful in 2020.

Midfielder: Adrianna Ryder, Steinert, Jr.

Ryder and her twin sister, Julianna, had a big week for Steinert with three goals each. Steinert has been playing really well this season and the offense has come to play with the Ryder twins setting the tone. Adrianna leads the Spartans with six goals overall in 2021.

Defender: Gillian Kibbey, Lawrence, Jr.

Kibbey helped set the tone on defense for Lawrence in three straight shutouts. The junior also scored a goal in a win over Hamilton West. Lawrence played its best defensive game of the season in a 1-0 win over Hightstown.

Goalkeeper: Lucy Fleming, Hopewell Valley, Jr.

The junior has posted clean sheets in the last four games. Fleming is one of the best keepers in the CVC and she is in a groove right now. Hopewell Valley has been perfect so far fall and right now, its defense has been impossible to beat.

Greater Middlesex Conference

Forward: Lily Vengelis, Calvary Christian (Old Bridge), Jr.

Vengelis scored nine goals in the past week and that included a four-score effort in a win over Dunellen. The junior also had both goals in a 2-1 win over Mother Seton and a hat trick in a victory against Somerset Tech.

Midfielder: Kirti Craig, Spotswood, Sr.

The UMass-Lowell commit scored six times in the last week. Craig put up back-to-back hat tricks in wins over Middlesex and Wardlaw-Hartridge. Spotswood is 3-0-1 in games when Craig scores a goal so far this fall.

Defender: Allison Gilbert, East Brunswick, Sr.

East Brunswick hasn’t given up a goal since a season-opening loss to Westfield. Gilbert is the tone-setter on the back line and her play is a big reason why the Bears have posted four straight shutouts. The Rhode Island commit also had a goal against South Brunswick.

Goalkeeper: Alessandra Socio, St. Thomas Aquinas, Sr.

Socio has been brilliant in net for St. Thomas Aquinas, which has now won its last four games. The rookie has made 15 saves in each of the last three games. St. Thomas Aquinas needed every one of those stops in a 2-1 win over Carteret this week.

Hudson County Interscholastic Athletic League

Forward: Xochilt Turijan, Hudson Catholic, Sr.

The senior now has 82 career scores after scoring seven times in wins over McNair and Memorial. Turijan has 11 goals already this season for Hudson Catholic. Last fall, the senior scored 30 goals and was one of the top strikers in the state.

Midfielder: Mia Rodriguez, North Bergen, So.

The sophomore scored five times in the last week and that included a goal in a game against Bayonne. Rodriguez added a four-score performance against Memorial.

Defender: Maci Covello, Kearny, Jr.

Covello is the best defensive player in Hudson County and she is going to help Kearny win a lot of games this fall. On top of her defensive plays, Covello has also stood out so far this season with a pair of goals for the Kardinals.

Goalkeeper: Maura Hundley, Bayonne, Sr.

The senior keeper made 10 stops for Bayonne in a 3-1 win over North Bergen. Bayonne has played some tough out-of-conference games so far this fall, but the Bees have a chance to win a county title this season. Hundley splits time in net with senior Loraine Valenzuela.

North Jersey Interscholastic Conference

Forward: Ella Madden, Park Ridge, Sr.

The senior was a star this week for Park Ridge, putting up three goals and three assists in a pair of wins. Madden hit the game-winning goal in a 3-2 victory over Emerson Boro, knocking a ball out of the air and into the back of the net. The senior also had an assist in the first half of that game. Madden had a two-goal, two-assist performance against Cresskill.

Midfielder: Ruby Conroy, Hawthorne, Sr.

Conroy is part of an explosive offense at Hawthorne and she showed that with four goals and two assists. The senior now has nie goals and four assists overall this season, and she’s in store for a huge year. Hawthorne has been perfect so far and offense is a big reason why.

Defender: Emily Abbott, Waldwick, Sr.

Abbott can make plays on the back line or slide into the midfield and give a boost to the Waldwick offense. The senior has three goals and three assists already this year. She also is one of the tone-setters for a team that has only let up one goal so far.

Goalkeeper: Sophia Pappalardo, Glen Rock, Sr.

The senior helped firm in net this past week in a pair of 1-0 wins. Pappalardo stopped five shots in a win over Pompton Lakes and then blocked four more in a victory against Rutherford. Glen Rock has one of the top defenses in this league and will be hard to score on.

Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference

Forward: Chloe Flynn, Hackettstown, So.

Hackettstown is off to a 5-0 start and Flynn has scored two goals in all of those games. The sophomore leads the team with 10 goals early on this fall. Seniors Caitlyn Sanchez and Kayla Kuncken have also helped spark the Tigers offense this season.

Midfielder: Kate Mazella, Sparta, Sr.

The senior put up a big week, scoring four goals and sending out three assists for Sparta. Mazella had a goal and two assists in a 3-2 victory over Mount Olive. She also had a hat trick in a win over Morris Hills. Sophomore Juliana Dolinski also played well in the midfield.

Defender: Maddie Ryan, Mendham, Jr.

Ryan is one of the foundation pieces on defense for a Mendham team that has been crushing it so far this fall. The Morris County squad has four straight shutouts and the last three of those came against teams that won regional championships last year. This year is playing extremely well and proving that it is one of the best teams in New Jersey right now.

Goalkeeper: Alex Jurow, Parsippany Hills, Jr.

The junior has been playing really well this fall for Parsippany Hills, making 47 saves while only giving up two goals. Jurow stopped 15 shots in a 1-0 loss to Gov. Livingston over the weekend and then came up with 12 stops in a 1-0 win over Morristown.

Olympic Conference

Forward: Olivia Brocious, Paul VI, Jr.

Brocioius hit the game-winning shot in overtime to lift Paul VI to a 3-2 win over Cherry Hill West. The junior also had two key goals in a 4-2 victory over Cherry Hill East last Wednesday. Brocioius scored 10 times as a rookie two years ago and she’s back on that pace.

Midfielder: Nikki Dedes, Shawnee, Sr.

The senior scored the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Lenape this week. Dedes also had a pair of goals in a win against Seneca. The senior missed last year with an injury, but her play right now is reminiscent of what she did at the end of the 2019 season after being eligible following her transfer from Bishop Eustace.

Defender: Faith Quinn, Eastern, Jr.

Eastern hasn’t given up a goal in its last four games and Quinn is a big reason why. The junior brings a veteran presence to the defense and makes the Vikings tough to beat in the back along with keeper Alex Clark. Eastern just won the program’s 500th game and did it with a 1-0 shutout win over Clearview over the weekend.

Goalkeeper: Kelsey Newton, Washington Township, Sr.

The senior made 16 saves as Washington Township battled to earn a draw with Cherokee. Newton also kept a clean sheet earlier this season in a 1-0 win over Cherry Hill East.

Shore Conference

Forward: Vanessa Sarf, Manalapan, So.

Sarf has scored in four straight games and Manalapan has taken home the win every time. The sophomore netted the winning goal against Brick Township, 1-0, and also scored three times in a 4-0 win over Marlboro. Sarf also helped Manalapan beat Middletown South last week with both scores in a 2-1 upset win.

Midfielder: Isabel Guiro, Barnegat, Sr.

The senior has come on strong in the last week, with six goals and two assists. Guiro scored twice in a 2-1 win over Manchester Township. Then, she added a hat trick against Long Branch before coming through with a goal and an assist against Lower Cape May.

Defender: Kelsey Gilroy, Freehold Township, Sr.

The four-year starter not only has been the leader of an air-tight defense, she also has gotten in on the scoring action. Gilroy put up three goals and an assist in the past week. The senior’s biggest impact though is on defense, where Freehold Township has given up just one goal.

Goalkeeper: Isabelle Levy, St. Rose, So.

The sophomore did everything she could do to keep St. Rose in games over the past week. Levy stopped 16 shots in a 2-1 win over Point Pleasant Beach to get things started. Then, she made 19 saves in a draw with Point Pleasant Boro. St. Rose fell to St. John Vianney in its next game, but Levy was sensational with 13 saves.

Skyland Conference

Forward: Alyssa Assante, Immaculata, So.

Assante scored four goals in the last week and now leads the team with seven scores overall in 2021. Senior Luciana Rodrigues has also been unreal with three goals and 10 assists for the Somerset County squad.

Midfielder: Sydney Incarnato, Bernards, Jr.

The junior scored the game-winning goal as Bernards upset Mount St. Mary, 1-0. Incarnato also had two goals and an assist in a 3-2 victory over North Plainfield. The talented midfielder has either scored or assisted on six of the team’s seven goals this fall.

Defender: Grace Morris, Watchung Hills, Jr.

The three-year starter is back this fall and having the same high-level impact she has provided since her rookie year. Watchung Hills is one a three-game winning streak and has only given up one goal during that run.

Goalkeeper: Brielle Bontempo, Delaware Valley, So.

The sophomore played a good game against Rutgers Prep, holding the state’s best offenses to just one goal. Bontempo made nine saves in that game. The sophomore has come up with some big games so far this year and helped keep Delaware Valley in contention.

Super Essex Conference

Forward: Grace Madigan, Verona, Sr.

The talented forward buried seven goals in the last week and now has eight on the season. Madigan hit her first strike earlier in the year during a 2-1 win over Caldwell. This week, she had a hat trick against Technology and four goals in a 5-2 win against Bloomfield.

Midfielder: Aminata Diop, West Orange, Fr.

The rookie forward scored the game-winning goal as West Orange upset Livingston, 2-1. Diop also hit a key goal earlier in the year in a 4-3 win over Nutley. The freshman has three goals and established herself as a playmaker for one of the county’s top teams.

Defender: Chloe Skipper, Montclair Kimberley, Sr.

The UPenn commit helped the Cougars pitch a shutout against rival Montclair on Tuesday. Montclair Kimberley also picked up a shutout win against Livingston this season. Skipper is one of the best defensive players in the state and played a key role in both wins.

Goalkeeper: Catelena Robson, Nutley, Jr.

Robson recorded back-to-back shutouts in the past seven days and then came up with a huge play in a 3-2 win over Millburn. The junior made nine saves in that game, but also scored in an Essex County showdown that came down to the wire. That goal was a 60-yard rocket that beat the keeper and helped Nutley pick up the victory.

Tri-County Conference

Forward: Brittany Boyle, Triton, So.

The sophomore had a goal and an assist as Triton picked up a 2-1 win over Palmyra. Kyra Samalonis and Rebekah Shepkosky also played key roles in that game. Samalonis leads the team with seven assists this fall.

Midfielder: Catriona Galvin, Pitman, Sr.

Galvin has taken over as the lead scorer for this team and she has been on fire, with at least one goal in five straight games. The senior scored all three goals in a win over Pennsville and also had the team’s lone goal in a tie with Deptford.

Defender: McKenna Williams, Kingsway, Sr.

Williams is part of a defense that has been tough to score on this fall. Kingsway has only given up one goal all year and posted four straight shutouts. The South Jersey squad has pulled out 1-0 wins in its last three games.

Goalkeeper: Isabella Norman, Deptford, Jr.

The junior has been sensational over the course of the last week. Norman stopped 14 shots in a 1-0 win over Delsea and then came up with another nine saves in a 1-1 draw with Pitman. Those are two of the best games that the junior has ever played at Deptford.

Union County Conference

Forward: Riley Cross, Oak Knoll, Fr.

Cross has scored all but one of Oak Knoll’s goals this season and on that score, she recorded the assist. The freshman is one of the elite rookies in the state and she is going to be tough to stop the next four years. Cross has four goals already this season and that includes the game-winning strike against Cranford.

Midfielder: Allie Post, Gov. Livingston, Sr.

The Rutgers commit has made plays all over the field for Gov. Livingston this fall. Post came up with two goals and two assists in a dominant performance that lifted her team to a 4-1 win over Oak Knoll. She also had a game-winning goal against Summit and an assist on the game-winning score against Parsippany Hills.

Defender: Elise Fox, Westfield, Sr.

Fox has been active in all aspects of the game this season for Westfield. The Gettysburg commit had a game-winning goal and an assist last week against Scotch Plains-Fanwood and then picked up an assist in a 2-0 win over Cranford. The defender was also a key part of a tough 2-1 victory over Randolph.

Goalkeeper: Zoe Pite, Elizabeth, So.

The sophomore made 13 saves in a 3-3 tie against Union earlier this season and then posted back-to-back shutouts. Pite was perfect in a 1-0 win over Brearley and unbeatable in a 2-0 victory over Johnson a few days later.
