BAY CITY, MI - Those looking to cross the Saginaw River in Bay City ran into a bit of a headache last night after one of the bridges ended up stuck open.
A BAY Alert went out 7:25 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21 warning residents that Veterans Memorial Bridge, or the M-25 bridge, was stuck open. Drivers were asked to seek an alternate route at that time. Bay City Department of Public Safety vehicles were blocking access to the bridge and to help reroute traffic.
A BAY Alert then advised residents that Veterans Bridge reopened at 11:27 p.m. that night.
The Veterans Memorial Bridge is operated and maintained by the Michigan Department of Transportation and it serves as a connection for M-25 between the east and west sides of Bay City by spanning the Saginaw River.
MDOT representative Jocelyn Hall explained that the bridge had an electrical/mechanical component that malfunctioned on Tuesday. While the issue was able to be repaired fairly quickly, said Hall, MDOT is planning to do a full inspection on the bridge on Sept. 27. Hall said that this inspection will be able to confirm at that point in time if there are any immediate repairs that MDOT will need to make to the bridge or if any parts need to be replaced to keep the bridge running as smoothly as possible.
