Dealing with Parent Burnout, Mental Health Signs & What to Do
From the playful accidents to the cute catastrophes, to all the parents out there, this too shall pass. But, sometimes it can get a little overwhelming and parent burnout can happen. The good news… it’s not permanent.
According to renowned parenting expert, licensed educational psychologist, board-certified behavior analyst, Reena B. Patel – ‘Parent Burnout’ can happen when mom and dad are taking on too much, and they don’t enjoy any ‘me time’. As a result, their mental health can take a toll.
Signs of Parent Burnout include:
- Limited tolerance
- Lack of sleep
- Inability to eat
- Obsessive-compulsive tendencies
- Memory Loss
Here’s are some of Reena’s recommendations on how to get rid of it:
- Let go of the guilt
- Plan for Self Audits- Calendar them at least every three months, Figure out where limits need to be set, and what needs to change in order for that to happen. Define what needs to change and adjust, communicate clearly what your needs are, and reassess three months later.
- Prioritize Sleep
- Pick a new hobby to try
- Find mini Self- Care moments
- Share responsibilities
- Create a reserve by delegating back up if you are stretched too thin
- Remember You can not give what you do not have- so refuel.
