The Wonder Years returns to ABC, with a different perspective

ATLANTA — For those of a certain age, the TV show “The Wonder Years” was a part of their childhood they’ll probably never forget.

The show was a mainstay of ABC’s primetime programming in the mid 1980′s and it’s being brought back to life. Back then the show featured Fred Savage as the main character and the stories focused on a grown up version of Savage, voiced by actor Daniel Stern, narrating his life experiences as a child raised in a white, middle-class, suburban neighborhood during the late 1960′s.

The show will highlight “Dean” as he grows up in a Black, middle class family living in racially charged Montgomery.

The new version of the show is produced in both Atlanta and in Alabama with the city of Montgomery taking center stage. It will feature the viewpoint of 12-year old Dean, played by actor E.J. Williams. The narrator will be Academy Award nominated actor Don Cheadle and Savage is one of the show’s executive producer’s.

Dulé Hill will play his father and Atlanta native and actress Saycon Senblow plays his mom. Channel 2 Action News reporter Heather Catlin spoke to Senblow about getting to work in her hometown.

“We get to present this classic story with a whole new family in a whole new twist. It’s been amazing being back home,” Senblow said. “I drove by my old high school--shout out to Tri-Cities High School, where I cut my teeth as an actor in Atlanta.”

Senblow said she was a fan of the original series and she’s excited to see a newer version of the premise, told from a different point of view.

“We can’t just keep watching the same point of view,” Senblow said. “So it’s nice to see different variations and different generations, different versions of a show.”

The Wonder Years debuts on ABC/WSB-TV Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.
