Former Rhode Island Secretary of State Matt Brown announced a run for Rhode Island Governor on Wednesday as part of a slate of progressive candidates.
Brown is running on a ticket with State Senator Cynthia Mendes as his preferred Lieutenant Governor selection.
The slate of progressive candidates will run for state and local office under the umbrella of the Rhode Island Political Cooperative.
In his campaign announcement video, Brown said that “Rhode Island is run by the most corrupt political machine in America.”
He blamed the establishment for cutting deals for the well connected, and doing nothing for schools, healthcare, and the environment.
The Rhode Island Democratic Party sent out a dismissive release on Brown’s announcement.
In a statement from Kate Coyne-McCoy, the party called his run a “vain attempt to get himself elected.”
“Two years ago, the voters of RI had the chance to cast a ballot for Matt Brown for Governor- the voters loudly, clearly, voted no,” the statement read in part.
Brown ran unsuccessfully in 2018 in the Democratic gubernatorial primaries against incumbent Governor Gina Raimondo.
Numerous candidates have announced their bid to unseat Governor Dan McKee.
Last week Seth Magaziner announced his run.
Dr. Luis-Daniel Munoz is also in the race.
