Family and friends on Wednesday morning honored 28-year-old Malcolm Sostre, who was shot and killed at Sacred Heart Park the night before.
A second person who was shot, an unidentified 19-year-old man, remains in critical condition at the hospital.
“They were just playing ball, and this happens,” said Debra Lefort, who lives in the area and did not want to be shown on camera.
“I feel so sorry for the mother,” she added. “He’s just a baby.”
Lefort, along with other neighbors, said they are concerned about the double shooting.
She didn’t see anything, but she heard gunshots.
“I heard this ‘pop, pop,’ and I said, ‘Wait a minute -- must be gunshots,’ so I went outside and heard the last shot,” Lefort said.
While no arrests have been made in connection to the shooting, authorities told NBC 10 News one person is facing gun charges.
However, police said that person is not believed to be the shooter.
“We got to get these guns off the street,” Lefort said. “There are babies over here.”
Police said they found Sostre shot multiple times in the corner of the basketball court, located on Sacred Heart Avenue and High Street, around 9 p.m.
He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
A memorial was placed there by Sostre’s family and friends.
His sister said the candles on the other side of the fence are for someone that passed away few months ago, who was a friend of Sostre’s.
Another victim of the shooting, who police have not identified, was found nearby on Fales Street.
“Officers then located another male, 19 years of age, a block away, who fled from the basketball courts, suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head,” Col. Anthony Roberson, of the Central Fall Police Department, said.
The man is in serious, but stable condition, and is expected to be OK.
“They were at the basketball courts for a basketball game and both our victims were victims, not suspects,” Maj. Christopher Creed, of the Central Falls Police Department, said.
Police said they stopped a car leaving the scene. Two people were detained, and one person was later arrested, as a gun was located in the vehicle.
“It’s under investigation,” Creed said. “We don’t believe them to be the suspect of the shooting, but multiple vehicles were fleeing the scene, as you can imagine, after the shooting.”
Lefort said she hopes the violence ends here.
“These kids -- I don’t know how they get their hands on these guns,” Lefort said. “I just wish they would disappear.”
