New Certificate Program for Aspiring Small Business Managers

A new certificate program that gives students a foundation of basic small business skills in accounting, management and economic analysis has been approved in the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences’ Department of Applied Economics (APEC).

The small firm management certificate requires four three-credit courses: small firm accounting basics, small firm management, agricultural law, and analytical methods in applied economics. The agricultural law course covers key issues that impact many businesses, including the Endangered Species Act, water law and federal land regulations. Students will learn to analyze data to improve decision-making and how to apply strategic management techniques as they gain a better understanding of how to successfully manage a small business.

“I am very excited about the potential of the certificate program to add marketability and increased economic opportunities for many of our students,” said Ryan Bosworth, APEC department head. “Completing the certificate program will give our students essential knowledge that provides a competitive edge in today’s labor market.”

This program was designed in response to a growing need for foundational business skills and is easy to add to any major. Students can also use the certificate program as a starting point for a minor in small firm management.
