After more than seven decades of operating the Castle Restaurant, the Nicas family on Tuesday announced they are retiring and closing the iconic eatery.

But food will continue to flow through the building on Main Street.

A message that was shared to patrons both on Facebook and on the restaurant’s website said the restaurant had been sold to another family after the Nicas family ran the Castle Restaurant for 71 years.

“Please understand that this is a very emotional event for our family, and not one we have taken lightly,” the statement said. “Though we’ve had almost two years to come to terms with this decision, we can’t help but feel the weight of the emotions that 2020 and 2021 have brought, and reflect on the 71 years of lives well-lived within these Castle walls.”

The restaurant housed inside a stone castle structure was put on them market in Jan. 2020, months before the pandemic crippled the hospitality industry.

“We didn’t know then what the next 20 months would bring to us and the world, and we don’t think we would have believed you if you had told us in advance,” the statement said. “Throughout the last two years, we’ve seen some ups and downs to say the least. We are so very thankful to all our loyal friends, customers, and staff who have supported us throughout the years and especially through the trauma of this global pandemic.”

The Castle will remain a restaurant, according to the statement. The family that purchased the building from the Nicas intents to continue serving food “in their own unique style”, the statement said.

Customer who still have gift certificates for the Castle Restaurant within seven years of Sept. 21, 2021 can contact staff at info@castlerestaurant.com to have them redeemed.

“We have been blessed to have all of you as our extended family,” the statement said.
