Rumour Mongering: Basel Plan January Move for Loris Karius

There had been hopes to find the Liverpool goalkeeper a permanent new home in the summer.

Loris Karius first arrived at Liverpool in 2016 as one of Germany’s most highly regarded young goalkeepers. Five years later, it’s fair to say the now 28-year-old’s career hasn’t gone the way many expected it would have.

Following two difficult seasons in England, Karius has spent the last three years on loan in Turkey and Germany, and when he returned to Liverpool this past summer the goal was to find the shot stopper a new permanent home.

That goal wasn’t met, and he now sits fourth on the club’s depth chart. However, there are fresh rumours that one club that had shown some interest in signing him over the summer could make a move for him in January.

That club is FC Basel, one of the Swiss league’s perennial powers. At least that’s the story according to Bild, who suggest the goalkeeper—now into the final year of his Liverpool deal—could be set for a permanent switch.

Given Karius’ standing and contract status, Liverpool would gain little from his departure bar clearing some wages for the final six months of his contract, but if the goalkeeper wants the move to Basel it would likely go through.
