Lenawee Christian girls golf wins second-straight IGL title

JACKSON — The team from the Independent Golf League gathered at Lakeland Hills Golf Club Tuesday for the IGL girls championships where Lenawee Christian solidified a second-straight conference championship.

The Cougars, who won each of the IGL jamborees, shot a round of 378 followed by Columbia Central (388), Clinton (451), Concord (498), Hillsdale (539) and Hudson (546). Madison and Onsted did not have enough golfers to post team totals.

Leading the way for LCS was Lauren Swiggum with an 86 while Avery Sluss shot an 88, Morgan Bell shot a 98 and Madalyn Shaw shot a 106.

Kyleigh and Breanna Ramos earned First Team and Second Team honors respectively for Clinton to lead the Redwolves to third in the conference.

Onsted didn't post a team total, but Annika Berg earned First Team honors while Maddy Zellen earned Second Team honors.

VOLLEYBALL

Adrian 3, Pinckney 1: At Pinckney, the Maples opened Southeastern Conference White Division play with a four-set victory, 25-14, 25-14, 22-25, 25-13.

Morgin White had a strong match for Adrian with 14 kills, eights digs and five aces while Paige Watterson had seven kills and three aces. 

Olivia McKenzie had 34 assists while Breslyn Sikkenga had eight digs and four aces.

Lenawee Christian 3, Hillsdale Academy 1: At Adrian, the Cougars took a four-set match against the Colts, 25-14, 25-15, 20-25, 25-16.

Kelsie Lilly had 11 kills and five digs while Isabelle Kirkendall had 10 kills and five digs. Hannah Baker had four kills, three blocks and two aces while Gabby Bryja had 23 assists, seven digs and two aces.

Josie Mineff had nine digs and two assists.

Britton Deerfield 3, Pittsford 2: At Pittsford, the Patriots took a Tri-County Conference matchup in five sets, 25-18, 22-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-13.

Claire Molnar had six kills while Jillian Molnar had five and four blocks for BD. 

Kody Haddix had 17 assists and 15 digs while Alayna Salenbien had 10 assists and three aces. Madelena Arriaga had three aces to go with 36 digs.

"Tonight showed the girls the difference between playing as individuals and playing as a team," said head coach Haley Smith. "The girls did not give up that fifth set, they pushed till they finished."

Dundee 3, Onsted 2: At Dundee, after the Vikings jumped out to an incredible start, the Wildcats battled back in the Lenawee County Athletic Association matchup to force five sets, but lost, 25-4, 15-25, 16-25, 25-13, 15-6.

Kennedy Ross had 10 digs, nine kills and three blocks while Ruby Foster had 13 kills and three blocks. Kate Gorney had 12 kills and a block while Kamryn Ross had 32 assists and three aces.

Rayne Ross had 11 digs and an ace.

Vandercook Lake 3, Addison 2: At Addison, the Panthers dropped a Cascades Conference matchup with five sets, 20-25, 25-12, 24-26, 25-23, 15-6.

The Panthers took the opening set and held a 2-1 match lead, but the Jayhawks took a tight Set 4 and used the momentum to pull away in the fifth set.

Gina Hanson is leading the Panthers in kills with 128 this season while Ellie Clark has 221 digs, Lexi Petterson has 468 assists.

Chelsea 3, Tecumseh 1: At Chelsea, Tecumseh competed against a good Bulldogs squad, but opened SEC White play with a four-set loss, 25-20, 25-19, 26-24, 25-21.

Jillian Clary had 11 kills while Jaden Benschoter had 10. Emma Newlove didn't have a single error from the service line, going 16-for-16 with four aces, while Lily Hammond had 24 assists.

BOYS SOCCER

Adrian 4, Ypsilanti 1: At Adrian, the Maples picked up another SEC White victory to move to 3-3 in conference play and 7-4 overall.

Joey Spagnoli scored twice while Cameron Kendall had two assists, one to Spagnoli and another to Ben Schefka. Brady Hanosh had the other assist to Spagnoli while Aiden Smith found Ramon Oveja for the final goal.

Gary Kemerer made six saves in the win.

Pinckney 4, Tecumseh 1: At Pinckney, Liam Cornish scored Tecumseh's lone goal while Dylan Brewer assisted in the SEC White Division matchup.

Tecumseh couldn't recover from a slow start as it trailed 2-0 early before the Pirates made it a 3-0 game at the half.

Tecumseh's lone goal came on a corner kick from Brewer, which Cornish finished.

CROSS COUNTRY

Britton Deerfield, Madison, Onsted, Sand Creek at Blissfield Early Bird Invite: At Blissfield, the Onsted girls team took first overall led by Kara Terakedis as she continued her race winning streak.

The Wildcats girls had a team score of 41 and was followed by Dundee (70), Sand Creek (90), Britton Deerfield (93), Blissfield (102), Madison (134) and Erie Mason (156).

Terakedis won her sixth race of the season and seventh in a row with a time of 20:02.15 while Emmry Ross took third (20:34.83) and Jordan Taylor took 10th (23:50.83) to lead Onsted. Allie England took 13th (24:23.19) and Allyson Robarge took 14th (24:37.54).

Sand Creek was led by seniors Meredith Vontroba in fifth (22:58.52) and Korah Daniels in 11th (23:50.98) while Lydia Meckley took 18th (24:59.40).

The Patriots were led by freshman Aubrey Appleman as she took sixth (22:59.82) while senior Sara Bower was eighth (23:21.66), Jamie Stiver was 16th (24:49.41) and Haylie Shiels was 25th (26:17.64).

The Royals were led by Mari Cueto as she ran a 20:30.92 to take second overall while June Miller took seventh (23:02.83). Emily Bella took 24th (26:16.47).

Madison was led by Zoe Burciaga in 12th (24:16.33) while Ashlyn Hill took 19th (25:16.34).

On the boys side, Erie Mason won with score of 46 followed by Dundee (48), Whiteford (71), Madison (96), Onsted (98) and Sand Creek (167).

The Trojans were led by Henry Frederick in seventh (19:06.73) while Jamari Williams took 11th (19:25.82) and Carter Grof took 20th (20:21.7).

Onsted was led by Brody Amthor in third (18:13.98) and Mitchell Hiatt in 15th (19:50.09) while James Bayes took 24th (20:45.13).

Sand Creek was led by Nathan Russell in 39th (23:04.66).

Blissfield didn't have enough runners for a team score, but Ben Miller took eighth (19:09.8).

Napoleon at Addison: At Addison, the Panthers hosted Napoleon in a Cascades dual race where the Pirates won both, with the girls falling 24-34 while the boys lost 16-39.

The girls might have lost the dual, but freshman Stephanie Hernandez took first with a time of 21:54.49. Sophomore Sayra Hernandez took third (22:16.9) while Kendall Morris took ninth (25:21.14), Allison Morris took 10th (26:05.76) and Haley Humminga took 11th (28:07.98).

Nolund Perry was Addison's leader in the boys race as he took fifth (22:01.95) while Cameron Gramm took seventh (22:55.88), Nick Gardner took eighth (23:39.78), Alvin Hedrick took ninth (24:06.45) and Clayton Thomas took 10th (28:29.95).
