OXFORD—Oxford police are actively enforcing speed limits in school zones, and a recent enforcement resulted in 36 motorists being cited which carries a $500 fine.

Four officers participated using a speed timing device to enforce the 15 mph School Zone with activated flashing yellow lights between 2:15 p.m. and 4 p.m.

During the detail, 267 vehicles were clocked in the northbound direction only. Out of the 267 vehicles, 36 vehicles were in violation of Pennsylvania vehicle code 3365 B Special Speed Limitations – School Zones, which carries a fine of $500 and three points against the driver’s license.

The highest speed was clocked at 40 mph in the 15 mph zone. Of the 36 motorists cited, the average speeder was traveling 26.7 mph in the 15 mph zone.

In an active school zone, motorists can be convicted of speeding if  going as little as 1 mph over the speed limit. Motorists convicted of driving 16 mph or more in a school zone, will receive 3 points plus a fine.
