The New York Mets (73-78) and Boston Red Sox (87-65) are scheduled to play the finale of an interleague two-game set Wednesday at Fenway Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze the lines around the Mets vs. Red Sox odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Mets RHP Taijuan Walker (7-10, 4.27 ERA) makes his 28th start and 29th appearance. He has a 1.17 WHIP, 8.4 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 through 149 2/3 IP.

  • Allowed 2 earned runs on 3 hits and 0 walks with 3 strikeouts across 5 IP in a loss against the Philadelphia Phillies Friday.
  • Has dropped seven straight decisions, and hasn’t won in 12 starts dating back to July 3, when he had a record of 7-3 with a 2.61 ERA.

Red Sox LHP Chris Sale (4-0, 2.40 ERA) makes his seventh start. He has a 1.23 WHIP, 9.3 K/9 and 1.8 BB/9 through 30 IP.

Prediction

Red Sox 5, Mets 2

Money line (ML)

The RED SOX (-180) are right at my personal limit for a money line wager. While I prefer a play on the run line behind the red-hot Sale, playing this one straight up isn’t terribly out of line.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

RED SOX -1.5 (+110) is the way to go at plus money

Sale has been untouchable lately, while Walker hasn’t had a victory since early July. Betting baseball is all about pitching matchups, and this one is greatly skewed in favor of the home side. This might be my favorite play on the board for the entire MLB card.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 9.5 (-135) is the lean here, and quite attractive, especially when paired with a Red Sox run line play.

While Walker has been coughing up plenty of runs lately, including 6 home runs in his last 15 1/3 IP over three September starts, Sale will keep the opposition down.

It’s always harder sweating out Under bets rather than Overs, but it will be worth it Wednesday.
