The towering figures of the Civil Rights Movement were successful in large part because of the untold numbers of people who supported them in small ways. One of those brave supporters was Willa Bell Clark, a Shreveport woman who worked as a maid for a wealthy local family.

When strategist Ella Baker visited Shreveport to help Dr. C. O. Simpkins, Clark agreed to rent her a room in secret. Baker used a back entrance to leave and enter the building for two months, during which period she helped lay the groundwork for voter registration and Civil Rights reforms.

Police were never able to locate her.

Although the original structure is gone, the home Clark later built on the property still proudly stands.
