A family in Umatilla is taking family-owned business to the next level with not just one, but two shops side-by-side.
Uptown Floral is a shop that truly encompasses the meaning of family business with multiple generations coming together to run the store, and the mother and daughters at the heart of the operation.
Debora Fish told Action News that her roots run deep with flower shops that have a special name.
"About 25 years ago my mom and I had a flower shop in Centralia, Washington, and it was called Uptown Floral," said Debora.
When opening this shop, naming it after the original wasn't always the plan.
"Katy, my youngest one, said 'Why don't we call it after the old flower shop that grandma had.' And so this is really a tribute to her and our family...It's special to us," said Debora.
Kathleen said they always see dragon flies when they talk about their loved grandma, leading to the memorable name.
"It just felt right, and there were dragon flies around that day so it really, for me, was just a confirmation that it was the right choice to be used," said Kathleen.
Debora told us how it feels to come full circle from working with her mom, to working with her daughters and carrying on the special name.
"To do something like that is an honor, that our family recognizes and cherishes," Debora told us.
As Debora and her daughters, Kathleen and Techla, work to put together beautiful floral creations, laughter can be heard as memories are being made.
But the family business doesn't stop at Uptown Floral, right next door is a shop called Game Forge, owned by no one other than Debora's daughter Techla and her husband Travis.
These two working next to each other, separated by just one wall, means some new favorite parts about coming to work for the duo.
"It's nice to be able to have my family and to be able to see my husband and kid all the time," Techla said.
The couple told Action News that the game store is about more than just selling games for their family.
"That's, for us, what the game store is about anyways. Having a place where kids like ours, like we were, have a place to go be, and have fun, and find out who they are for real," said Techla.
"The people, when they come in and they play games, and it makes them happy, and that makes me happy," Travis said.
They told us that people can even come in and take the games out and play them before they decide if they want to buy them.
The side by side stores give a unique opportunity to create laughter and memories for the families on Sixth Street.
