During the fourth quarter of the New York Giants' gut-wrenching loss to the Washington Football Team last Thursday night, cameras caught wide receiver Kenny Golladay yelling at offensive coordinator Jason Garrett on the sideline.
Golladay addressed the outburst with reporters on Monday, admitting that his emotions uncharacteristically got the best of him and the incident with Garrett was a non-issue. Whether or not there's internal drama, Golladay's teammate, Sterling Shepard, has also downplayed the matter.
"It's like a family. And with every family, there's going to be some times where you get heated and there's going to be some heated moments," Shepard told The Zach Gelb Show on Tuesday. "But you move on from them. You talk about them, discuss them whenever you calm down, and move on. So, that's what we've done as a team and unit...
"I'm not too big on playcalling, I think it comes down to execution. And we have to do a better job of executing the plays [Garrett] does call. I think he puts us in the right position, and if he doesn't, he's quick to tell us he didn't. But I'm a big believer that it comes down to execution, at the end of the day."
Golladay, who signed a four-year, $72 million free agent deal with the Giants back in March, is off to a slow start on the field. Through two games, he has just seven receptions on 14 targets for 102 yards and no touchdowns. On top of that, New York has started 0-2 for a fifth consecutive season.
Perhaps Golladay can take solace in the fact that his quarterback, third-year starter Daniel Jones, played exceptionally well against Washington last week. The former sixth-overall pick completed 22 of 32 passes for 249 yards with two touchdowns, and recorded a 102.2 quarterback rating -- the sixth-highest mark of his career.
As for Shepard, he's become Jones' favorite target. The sixth-year veteran currently leads the team in targets (19), receptions (16), and receiving yards (207), and he's on pace to have a career-best season.
New York (0-2) will host the Atlanta Falcons (0-1) in a Week 3 matchup this Sunday. According to FiveThirtyEight's projections, the Giants currently have just an 11-percent chance to reach the playoffs and an 8-percent chance to win the NFC East.
