A Baxley man accused of the Sept. 20 murder of a female at a Cooperville motel remains in the Screven County Jail for the court process.

The Screven County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Holiday Motel on Statesboro Highway Monday at approximately 11:11 p.m. in reference to an unresponsive female. It was later determined that she was the victim of a murder.

Charles Michael Librizzi

Screven County Sheriff Mike Kile said the female died of “blunt force trauma around the head area.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations was requested to assist the Screven County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation.

At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 21, Kile was notified that the suspect — Charles Michael Librizzi of Baxley— had been taken into custody by Baxley Police Department Chief Jeffery Taylor and other officers.

The 45-year-old Librizzi of 45 Pendleton Street, Baxley, was transported to the Screven County Sheriff’s Office and charged with murder.

The Screven County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend its thanks to the GBI; Screven County EMS; Screven County Assistant Coroner Ramona Stewart; Baxley Police Department; Appling County Sheriff’s Office and all surrounding counties who assisted with the lookout for Librizzi.

Baxley Police Chief Jeffery Taylor initiated a traffic stop on Sept. 21 on a suspicious vehicle at the Key West Inn. The vehicle fled the area and was pursued by Taylor and two other officers. The chase spanned over 9 miles, ending in a cotton field at the end of Hoppy Trail. The suspect, identified as Librizzi, was taken into custody and found to be in possession of a “large quantity of suspected methamphetamine.”

Librizzi also was wanted by the Screven County Sheriff’s Office and GBI as a suspect in a murder which occurred on Sept. 20 in Sylvania.

As for the Baxley charges, Librizzi was arrested for trafficking in methamphetamine; fleeing and attempting to elude police officers; and traffic-related offenses.

Taylor thanked the Appling County Sheriff’s Office for its assistance.
