INDIANAPOLIS —
Haziq Zed has battled injury this season.
But that certainly wasn't evident Tuesday night at Michael A. Carroll Stadium when the Bellarmine University men's soccer junior midfielder registered the game-winning goal in the second half of a 1-0 win over IUPUI.
Sophomore forward
Nolan McGrath assisted on the goal for Bellarmine (4-2-1), which delivered a resilient effort after suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 ASUN loss in overtime to No. 22 Lipscomb on Saturday. McGrath netted the goal against the Bisons and set up Zed against the Jaguars (2-3-1), a nonconference opponent.
McGrath crossed to Zed just outside of the box. Zed leapt to steady the pass off a hop and, coming at the descent of another hop, he unleashed a spectacular strike inside the far post for a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute. It was the first goal of the season for the ASUN Preseason All-Conference selection.
With less than 20 seconds remaining, Bellarmine committed an ill-advised foul that set IUPUI with a free kick that led to a dangerous chance near the far post. The Knights were credited with blocking an attempt, and time ran out before the Jaguars could get off a desperation corner kick.
Matthew Brozovich recorded his third shutout in three starts. The junior goalkeeper collected five saves as Bellarmine's defense kept IUPUI's threatening chances to a minimum.
Bellarmine finished with a 14-11 advantage in shots, but the Jaguars had a 5-2 edge on frame.
Bellarmine returns to ASUN action with a 1 p.m. (ET) contest Saturday at Central Arkansas.
