Melbourne are on the edge of creating history - only one win away from winning the club's first Premiership since 1964.

But it's been a rocky road for the Demons over the last 14 years, with the team only qualifying for the finals once in that time.

Six of the club's top 20 heaviest defeats in their history happened during this period.

Sporting News reflects on some of Melbourne's toughest times on the field as the club finally looks set for a successful era.

Geelong 37.11 (233) def. Melbourne 7.5. (47) - Kardinia Park, 2011

A defeat that was arguably rock bottom for the Demons, with Geelong thrashing them by 186 points - which was the second greatest winning-margin of all-time.

The Cats kicked eight goals in the first quarter, 12 in the second, eight again in the third and finished the game with Melbourne putting in a performance that signified their current plight.

For Geelong, their star forwards dined out on the Demons, with Steve Johnson kicking seven goals, while Tom Hawkins and Cameron Mooney both snagged five majors.

The statistics did not make pretty reading for red and blue fans with Geelong having 510 possessions to 282, 69 inside 50's to 32 and 51 clearances to 30.

Only one Melbourne player had more than 20 possessions, with Jordie McKenzie recording 25 touches, while 12 players had 12 disposals or less.

Melbourne coach Dean Bailey was sacked 24 hours after the defeat and was replaced on the interim basis by club legend Todd Viney.

Incredibly, the Demons didn't finish on the bottom of the ladder that season, with four clubs - Gold Coast, Port Adelaide, Brisbane and Adelaide - placed below them.

Essendon 28.16 (184) def. Melbourne 5.6 (36) - MCG, 2013

Two years after the humiliating Geelong defeat, the Demons suffered their third biggest loss of all-time to Essendon by 148 points at the MCG.

A 55-point lead at half-time grew into a 25-goal thrashing with Melbourne only kicking one major in the second half as the Bombers piled on 15.

Stewart Crameri kicked 6.0 to be Essendon's leading goalscorer, with Tom Bellchambers contributing four goals and Jobe Watson three.

The Bombers recorded 78 inside 50's to 28 and won the disposal count 452-262.

For the Demons, only three players managed 20-plus possessions, including Nathan Jones (25), Jeremy Howe (23) and James Frawley (21).

Coach Mark Neeld survived the chopping block immediately after the round two defeat, but was sacked in June and replaced on an interim basis by Neil Craig.

With two wins from their 22 games, Melbourne finished second-last on the AFL ladder - only ahead of GWS, who won only one match in their second season of existence.

North Melbourne 22.18 (150) def. Melbourne 4.4 (28) - Docklands, 2013

Also in 2013, a 25-point half-time deficit turned into an 122-point belting as the Demons capitulated in the second half against North Melbourne at Docklands in round 18.

Aaron Black and Ryan Bastinac both kicked four goals with the Kangaroos booting 16 majors-to-one after half time.

North Melbourne had 149 more disposals across the four quarters, winning the inside 50 tally 66-30 and clearances 49-27.

The Demons only had three players with 20-plus possessions, including Nathan Jones (24), Tom McDonald (22) and Colin Sylvia (21).

Other Melbourne capitulations in the last 15 years

In 2008, the Demons were once again humiliated by Geelong - this time by 116 points at the MCG with the final score 24.13 (157) to 5.11 (41) in the round 19 match.

Melbourne didn't score in the first quarter, with the Cats kicking 8.5 to set up the annihilation.

Geelong again proved to be Melbourne's tormentors in 2016, winning their round 23 clash at Kardinia Park by 111 points.

And at Subiaco in round 2 2012, the Demons were thrashed by West Coast to the tune of 108 points.
