Ichabods return home hosting Griffons on Family Day

FOR STARTERS
• The Washburn Ichabods return back to Yager Stadium for the annual Family Day game against Missouri Western on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m.
• The Ichabods are coming off a 28-24 loss to then-No. 23 ranked Nebraska-Kearney as the Lopers topped Washburn for the first time in Kearney since 1985.
• The Griffons have won their last two games rallying from a 28-7 deficit to Emporia State scoring 31 second-half points for a 38-37 win over the Hornets.
• It was the second-straight game the Griffons had trailed at the half before coming back for the win.
• The Ichabods are 5-8-1 on Sept. 25 in the program's history and has lost their last five … the Ichabods are 0-1 against Missouri Western on Sept. 25 facing them in 1999 falling 35-10 in St. Joseph.
• The Ichabods received votes in this week's AFCA Coaches Poll.
• Kameron Lake is ranked fifth in the nation in field goals per game at 2.0 and 13th in the nation in total points scored with 33.
• The Ichabods are fifth in the nation in net punting at 43.0 ypp and sixth in punt return defense.

ICHABODS ON THE CAREER CHARTS
• Ichabod running back Zach Willis sits 15th on the all-time rushing chart with 1,301 yards. He needs 147 yards to move into the top 10 at Washburn.
• Willis also has a career yards per attempt of 6.2 per carry as an Ichabod, which is fifth on the all-time chart behind Corey Crain who averaged 7.19 yards per carry.
• Ichabod quarterback Mitch Schurig has passed for 4,971 yards in his career which is sixth on the Ichabod career chart. To move into the top five all-time, he needs 525 yards.
• Schurig has also thrown for 44 touchdowns which is fifth all-time at Washburn and with nine more he can move into the top three all-time.
• Schurig is Washburn's all-time leader in passing completion percentage at 62.1 percent ahead of current coach Dane Simoneau who completed 58 percent of his passes.
• Schurig is also ranked ninth in total offense for a career with 4,717 yards.
• With six pass receptions, James Letcher, Jr. can become the 17th Ichabod to record at least 100 catches in a career at Washburn.
• Letcher's 25.97 yards per kickoff return is third all-time at Washburn.
 
NOTING THE GIFFONS
• The Griffons are 2-1 this season after winning two-straight at home with wins over Fort Hays State and Emporia State.
• The Griffons have outscored their opponents 82-23 in the second half including a 48-10 advantage in the third quarter.
• Griffon opponents have outscored Missouri Western 69 to 24 in the first half of games and 38 to 7 in the second quarter.
• Offensively the Griffons are averaging 439.3 yards per game while allowing 450.3 … through the air the Griffons are averaging 264.7 yards per game while allowing 316.3 per game and on the ground the Griffons are averaging 174.7 ypg and allowing 134.0 per game.
• Brandon Hall leads the team on the ground at 73.7 yards per game.
• Anthony Vespo is 42 of 72 passing with four touchdowns at 241.7.
• Cooper Burton has 15 catches for 294 yards and one score averaging 98 yards per game.
• Devan Burrell has 21 tackles with 18 solo stops and two for loss and Kobe Cummings has 18 tackles with two interceptions and a tackle for loss.
 
LAST MEETING WITH MISSOURI WESTERN
(Oct. 5, 2019) TOPEKA, Kan. – A short-handed Washburn Ichabod football team got out to a slow start and they could not recover in a 46-21 loss to Missouri Western on Hall of Fame Saturday in Yager Stadium dropping to 1-4 on the season.
The Griffons (3-2) scored on their first possession of the game on a 90-play drive and on the Ichabods ensuing possession, after gaining a first down a fumble by the Ichabods returned the ball back to Griffons and six plays later Missouri Western was up 14-0 7:32 into the game.
The Ichabods came back after the Griffon score when Zach Willis capped a nine-play, 83-yard drive cutting the lead in half, however the Griffons after starting at their own 3-yard line, scored in three plays stretching their lead to 21-7. Missouri Western added two more scores in the second quarter going up 36-7 before Cha•  Capps hit Jace Williams on a 27-yard touchdown pass as the Griffons took a 36-14 lead into the break.
Missouri Western tacked on a score in the third quarter and with 5:04 left in the game, Capps threw his second touchdown pass of the day on a 50-yard strike to Austen Hubert. Missouri Western finished up the scoring with a 46-yard field goal wrapping up the game with a 46-21 win over the Ichabods.
Making his first career start, Capps was 18 of 39 for 242 yards with two scores and also rushed for 38 yards on 12 carries. James Letcher, Jr. and four catches for 53 yards and Taylon Peters had four catches for 37 yards. Letcher also added six kickoff returns for 152 yards.
The Ichabod defense had four players with eight tackles each including Jacob Anderson, K.J. Turner, Channon Ross and Grant Bruner. Anderson added a sack for 14 yards and 2.5 tackles for loss for 17 yards and a forced fumble.
The Griffons outgained the Ichabods 503 to 396 finishing with 285 yards on the ground. Washburn was 2 of 13 on third down in the game and 3 of 8 on fourth down.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE ICHABODS
(Sept. 18, 2021) KEARNEY, Neb. -- KEARNEY, Neb. – The Washburn Ichabod lost for the first time in 2021 season falling to 2-1 after a 28-24 loss to the No. 23-ranked Nebraska-Kearney Lopers as a costly turnover and penalties added up to a three-point loss at Cope Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Ichabods opened the scoring with a seven-play, 84-yard drive wrapped up by a Taylon Peters' 4-yard touchdown run with 11:09 to play in the first quarter. The Lopers came right back with a scoring drive of their own with a 14-play, 78-yard drive on their only possession of the first 15 minutes.
On Washburn's second drive of the game, the Ichabod drove all the way to the UNK 5-yard line, but an Ichabod fumble into the end • one ended the scoring threat and the 15-play drive. After the Ichabod defense forced the first UNK punt of the game, the Ichabods went three and out setting up a 73-yard punt by Lane Spiker flipping the field as the ball went out at the UNK 1-yard line. However the Lopers put together a 99-yard drive on six plays highlighted by a 30-yard and a 62-yard run by UNK quarterback TJ Davis. UNK would score to take the 14-7 lead leaving 3:30 on the first half clock.
Washburn then marched 55 yards on six plays capped by Mitch Schurig's 2-yard toss to Connor Searcy tying the score at 14.
After trading punts to start the second half, the Lopers drove to the Ichabod 33, but the drive stalled when the Ichabods held on fourth down and took back over at the Washburn 33 with 4:59 to go in the third quarter.
The score remained 14-all entering the fourth quarter, the Lopers scored on the second play of the frame on a 51-yard touchdown run by Davis with 14:20 to play in the game staking UNK to a 21-14.
After driving to the UNK 38, the Ichabods came up short on a fourth down conversion and Schurig hit Letcher on a 35-yard strike to Letcher to the UNK three yard line.
The Ichabod defense forced a rumble with Davis was sacked by Braden Rose and it was recovered by Malick Fall at the UNK 30. After a 28-yard run by Peters moving the ball to the UNK 11 and an Ichabod second timeout of the half, Washburn threw and incomplete pass and then took the lead on a 26-yard field goal by Kameron Lake with 8:34 to go in the game.
UNK took advantage of an Ichabod personal foul on a late hit and the Lopers moved the ball to the Ichabod 39. After an defensive offside and a play for no gain for the Lopers, UNK converted a fourth down play from the Ichabod 31 the Ichabods hold the Lopers and take over at the WU 31 with 6:19 to play. The Ichabods had three plays, but do not move the ball returning it back to the Lopers with 4:55 to play.
The Lopers converted a third and 10 to the UNK 48 and then after a gain of two and an incomplete pass, the Lopers converted another third down play to the Ichabod 33 on a 17-yard pass completion with 3:35 to go in the game.  UNK converted its third, third down conversion to the Ichabod 18 with just under two minutes to play as Davis went over the 250-yard mark on the play. Davis then completed a 10-yard pass and moved the ball to the Ichabod eight with 80 seconds in the game. Davis then put the Lopers in front with 57 seconds to play from eight yards out.
Washburn took over at its 25 with 57 seconds to play, but only moved the ball to the UNK 50 after three plays as the Ichabod drive ended with an interception as the Ichabods lost for the first time this season snapping its five-game winning streak dating back to 2019.
The Ichabods were outgained 483 to 372 in the game as the Lopers accounted for 317 yards on the ground with 258 on 30 carries by Davis who rushed for three scores in the game and was 16 of 26 passing for 166 yards.
Peters finished with 113 yards on the ground on 13 carries averaging 8.7 yards per carry and one score. James Letcher, Jr., had five catches for 64 yards in the game. Schurig was 17 of 31 passing for 214 yards. Jacob Anderson led the Ichabod defense with seven tackles and K.J. Turner had six tackles as did Landen Urban and Brooks Peavler.
UNK was 11 of 16 on third down conversions and held the ball for 35:22 of the game. Washburn was 1 of 6 on third down in the second half going 6 of 12 in the game.

Washburn's will be on the road at Emporia State on Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. The Ichabods will then return home for back-to-back home games against Fort Hays State on Oct. 9 for the Hall of Fame game and on Oct. 16 against Northwest Missouri with both games starting at 1 p.m.
