Man arrested in connection to deadly stabbing in Fresno

A man that police say was stabbed to death Tuesday afternoon has been identified as 41-year-old Charles Kerns.

Police say Kerns was found suffering from multiple stab wounds around 4:30 p.m. near Belmont and Roosevelt Avenues in Fresno.


Kerns was disabled and required the use of a wheelchair, which was found on the sidewalk next to him.

According to Fresno Police, an argument broke out in a liquor store that later moved across the street.

That's when law enforcement says a 19-year-old man, later identified as Nickolas Irving, stabbed the victim and later ran from the scene.

Officers say witnesses chased the Irving and helped officers before he was taken into police custody.

Irving has been arrested and charged with murder.

Investigators are searching for individuals who helped locate the suspect or possibly witnessed portions of the assault. Detectives ask for help from the community and encourage anyone who has information to contact the Fresno Police Department.

Once the investigation has concluded, additional information on the suspect will be released.

This was the 56th murder of the year. This time last year, we had 36 murders.
