Pritzker, joined by US surgeon general and education secretary, urges people to get COVID-19 shot

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Nation’s top health official was in Chicago Tuesday urging people to get vaccinated, not just for themselves, but also for the people who might have to treat them if they get sick.

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy joined Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona for a visit to the Access Hawthorne Family Health Center in Cicero, where COVID-19 vaccinations were being given.

Murthy praised health workers for putting themselves on the line every day to help fight this pandemic, but said that dedication comes at a cost.

He said burnout among health workers is high. He urged people to get vaccinated to ease burnout among them and to protect children.

He said even for children too young to get the vaccine, having the people around them vaccinated can keep them safe.

Pritzker, by his side, was asked about reports that many nursing home workers were still unvaccinated.

And isn’t allowing them to opt-out for weekly testing too lenient?

He said it's unfortunate that so many have refused to get the vaccine, but says testing at least prevents anyone infected from working with nursing home residents.

He said there should be options.
