The Chicago Cubs today announced that first baseman Alfonso Rivas has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a right middle finger injury. To replace Rivas on the roster, outfielder Nick Martini was recalled from Triple-A Iowa.

Rivas, 25, made his major league debut on August 29. Since that time, he’s played in 18 games and hit .318/.388/.409 (14 for 44) with one home run and three runs batted in. With only 12 games left in the season, Rivas is probably done for 2021.

The Cubs acquired Rivas in a 2020 deal that sent Tony Kemp to the Athletics.

This is Martini’s fourth promotion to the majors this season. In those four stints in the majors, The 31-year-old Martini has played in 17 games and went 3 for 19, or .158/.227/.221. He had one double and two runs batted in.

Martini signed with the Cubs as a minor league free agent in January of 2021 after spending all of 2020 in the Phillies system.

Martini is on the bench in Chicago and available to play in tonight’s game against the Twins.
