Community roundup: Lang claims points title after rainout

The Pro Late Models don’t get a chance to run in Monroe, a former prep standout gets a new gig and more.

Naima Lang’s sixth points championship in Evergreen Speedway’s premier class came in an anticlimactic manner.

The Central Welding Supply 75 for Pro Late Models, which was scheduled as the main event for Saturday’s Championship Night 1 at the Monroe racetrack, was rained out. Therefore Lang, who came into the night with a hefty points lead, claimed the championship despite the season’s concluding race being canceled.

The title is added to the five Lang won in the Super Late Models division, most recently in 2016. He also kept the championship in the family as his son, Tyson, was the 2020 Pro Late Models champ. Tyson Lang did not race this year as he’s a walk-on quarterback with the University of Washington football team.

Dawson Cox finished second in the Pro Late Models standings, while Greg Bennett finished third. Kaden Holm was the Rookie of the Year.

Evergreen did manage to get some racing in Saturday before being washed out, and two other points champions were crowned: Mark Hubbard in Street Stocks and Branden Lindberg in Stinger 8s.

Championship Night 2 is this Saturday, when champions will be crowned in Winged Sprint Cars, Outlaw Figure 8s, Legends, Super Stock Figure 8s, Hornets and Mini Stocks.

Nobach joins UW softball coaching staff

Marysville Pilchuck High School graduate Kyle Nobach has been hired as an assistant coach for the University of Washington softball team.

Nobach, who graduated from Marysville Pilchuck in 2013, was part of the Oregon State University baseball team that won the national championship in 2018. He then went on to be an assistant coach with the Everett Community College baseball program, and also served as head coach of the Bend Elks summer collegiate baseball team.

Nobach will be in charge of offensive development and the outfield for the Huskies, who are one of the nation’s best college softball programs.

Strickland wins PNGA Men’s Mid-Amateur

Kamiak High School graduate Mark Strickland birdied the first playoff hole to claim the championship at the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA) Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship, held last Tuesday through Thursday at Silvies Valley Ranch in Seneca, Oregon. The Mid-Amateur is for amateur players ages 25 and older, and the PNGA covers Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia.

Strickland entered the third and final round in fifth place, five strokes behind the leader. But he made five birdies and just one bogey in his final round to finish with a three-round score of 5-under par 211, which tied him with Harrison Moir of Portland. The two replayed No. 18, with Strickland’s birdie giving him the title.

It was Strickland’s first PNGA title.
