‘The Voice’ season 21 episode 2 recap: Did Ariana Grande or John Legend use their blocks? [UPDATING LIVE BLOG]

The Voice” Season 21’s premiere week continued on September 21 with Ariana Grande, John Legend, Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson all continuing to build their teams during the blind auditions. Since Blake and Kelly used their blocks during Monday’s episode, that meant only Ariana and John still had the power in their pocket to block a rival coach from acquiring an artist for their teams. Did either of them use their blocks in Tuesday’s episode, or did they hold onto them for a bit longer?

Below, read our minute-by-minute “The Voice” recap of Season 21, Episode 2 to find out what happened Tuesday, September 21 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT. 8:00 p.m. – “Previously on ‘The Voice’!” In the season premiere, the four all-star coaches kicked things off with a bang with performance mash-up of “Hold On, I’m Comin’” and “Respect.” Toward the end of the night, Kelly blocked Blake during country artist Kinsey Rose’s performance of “Cowboy Take Me Away.” Later, Blake blocked John (and then lied about it) as Wendy Moten blew the roof off the house with her “We Can Work It Out” cover. Two blocks down, two to go.

8:12 p.m. Lana Scott is kicking things off tonight. The 28-year old country singer from Virginia could make Blake happy since he’s still waiting for a country vocalist on his team. Unfortunately for him, Kelly is Lana’s idol because she would prefer to be a country/pop crossover artist. Lana is singing “Hole in the Bottle” and her light, bubbly voice instantly gets Blake to press his button and Kelly follows soon after. It’s a two-chair turn for Lana. Blake exclaims, “That is country!” He proceeds to bash Kelly (as he always does) and then compliments Lana’s “whiny” voice. Kelly calls Blake a liar and tries to sway her over to her side with a turquoise jacket. They continue their banter for so long that John and Ariana get up and walk offstage for some popcorn. Okay, this deliberation is taking WAY too long. Wrap it up! This exhausting first audition finally ends with Lana choosing to join Team Blake.

8:28 p.m. – Next up is Samuel Harness, a 26-year old from Indiana who is one of five adopted siblings. His dad and uncles play in a bluegrass band and Samuel has loved growing up in a family with such diverse ethnicities. When Samuel was 18 he met his biological mother and it gave him an extra sense of understanding. Music became therapeutic for him because he has always struggled with his identity. Samuel is slowing down the rock song “Here Without You” and making it his own. I love the tone of his voice. John is the first to turn around, followed by Blake and Ariana. This kind of voice is what’s missing on the radio today. Ariana is impressed with the grip he has on his unique voice. Samuel assures her that he doesn’t sing country music and his influences are Bruno Mars, Lewis Capaldi and Ed Sheeran. John argues he would make a cool addition to his team and Blake compares Samuel’s voice to a “frying egg.” Samuel has decided to join Team Legend!

8:36 p.m.Carolina Alonso is a 23-year old Mexican immigrant who lives in Reno, Nevada. When her family first arrived in the United States she was embarrassed to live in her uncle’s garage, but now she is proud of where she came from. She sings with her family in a mariachi band sometimes, but she hopes “The Voice” will take her to the next level. She’s singing “El Triste” to show she is proud of her heritage and Kelly is the first coach to turn around. No other coach follows along so this is a freebie for Kelly.

8:47 p.m. – The next auditionee is singing “Driver’s License.” His name Chavon Rodgers and he’s got a pop/rock voice with a singer-songwriter vibe. Chavon sings with a lot of passion and sounds like a lot of current music stars. John turns his chair midway through the performance and Ariana joins the fun near the end. Chavon says he’s a 23-year old from the same hometown as Blake, Ada, Oklahoma. Chavon presents Blake with an Ada brick, even though Blake didn’t turn his chair. Ariana loved the journey of Chavon’s performance and complimented him on the arc. His nerves almost held her back from pushing her button, but she would love to work with him. John calls Chavon’s voice “inviting.” Chavon decides to join Team Ariana!

8:55 p.m. – The next artist is Serenity Arce and she’s just 14 years old. The Florida native is singing “I See Red,” and this is not the cookie-cutter music I was expecting from this youngster! She’s got some grit and anger to project on this stage. Okay Serenity! Unfortunately, the vocals were not up to par with her passion and none of the coaches turn around. She gets some encouraging words from the coaches and heads home.

9:04 p.m. – The next artist is hidden from view as they belt out “Into the Unknown.” It’s a very Broadway voice, but incredibly powerful. Will the judges bite? John does first and blocks Ariana in the process. As he turns we learn the singer’s name is Joshua Vacante. Ariana then turns around and is heartbroken to find out she has no chance. Joshua realizes he was obese when he was younger and he’s lost a lot of weight, but has held on to a lot of the insecurities. With no other options, Joshua joins Team Legend.

9:15 p.m. Hailey Green is a 15-year old who is returning after failing to get a chair turn in Season 19. Hailey is the only female on her high school football team and says she thrives under pressure. She was thrilled when Blake challenged her to come back in a year and she wants to prove to the coaches she has improved. Hailey is singing “Home” and says she relates to this song and is proud of her Southern roots. She takes the stage like a pro with a lot of soul and grit in her voice. I like this performance but the judges seem hesitant. Come on! Just when Hailey thought all hope was lost, Blake turns at the last second to claim the teenager for his team.

9:28 p.m. – Auditions continue with Jim & Sasha Allen, a father-son duo from Connecticut. Jim is a music teacher and Sasha loved growing up in a musical household. Sasha was born female and never felt comfortable as a child. When he transitioned to a male his classmates said a lot of hurtful things and music was his outlet. Jim & Sasha audition with the song “Leaving On a Jet Plane.” They’ve got an Americana/folk sound and blend well together. Kelly and Ariana each turn their chairs and the duo is thrilled. Blake didn’t turn his chair, but Sasha still gifts him with a picture he drew of Blake, Jim and Sasha. After a quick deliberation, Jim & Sasha choose to join Team Ariana.

9:40 p.m. – The next artist steps on stage singing “Superstition” with a lot of soul and passion, but it’s not too different than the countless other times I’ve heard this song. But the man can sing. John turns his chair pretty quickly and is followed by Ariana. Kelly thinks about it but doesn’t take the bait. We find out this singer’s name is Paris Winningham and he’s a 32-year old from Florida. He served in the Navy until being honorably discharged with a knee injury. Now he has the opportunity to make music and John will fight it out with Ariana to get Paris on his team. Paris weighs his options and decides to go with Team Legend.

9:47 p.m.Camryn B is from a small town in California and grew up singing the “Star Spangled Banner” at her brothers’ sporting events. One day her older brother severed his spinal cord in football so she put a lot of things on hold to help take care of him. Now it’s her chance to chase her dreams singing “Hometown Glory” for the judges. She has some pretty elements to her voice, but she also has a lot of pitch issues. None of the coaches turn their chairs.

9:59 p.m. – The final artist of the night is Gymani, a 23-year old small business owner from Georgia. She says becoming pregnant at age 19 forced her to grow up and focus on making a better life for herself. Gymani’s inspiration is her mother, who had a singing group when she was younger. Gymani is taking a risk by singing Ariana’s song, “pov.” Blake turns first, quickly followed by Ariana and John. Ariana looks blown away by this interpretation of her song. Kelly turns next to officially make this a four-chair turn. Ariana says, “That’s your song now, take it!” Then she promises to do anything to get Gymani on her team. The coaches all put up a pretty good fight to get Gymani on their team, but she decides to go with Kelly! Ariana feels as if she’s been wounded from every angle.
