Autopsy For Gabby Petito's Apparent Remains Scheduled For Tuesday
Coroner Dr. Brent Blue has confirmed that the remains believed to be missing travel blogger Gabby Petito will be examined.
An autopsy for remains that are believed to be Gabrielle “Gabby” Petito has been scheduled for Tuesday.
Petito’s apparent remains were discovered on Sunday as investigators searched the border of Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, where her mother last spoke to her in late August via phone.
FBI Supervisory Special Agent Charles Jones said at a press conference following the discovery that the remains were “consistent with the description” of the missing 22-year-old travel blogger.
Dr. Brent Blue, the Teton County coroner, told the New York Post on Monday that the autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday. He noted that no preliminary findings have been made yet. Officials are hoping that the autopsy will positively identify the remains and help determine a manner of death.
Blue has not immediately responded to Oxygen.com’s request for comment.
It’s not clear how long the autopsy will take. Blue told the Post that all information about the autopsy will be released by the FBI.
Petito and Laundrie had embarked on a cross-country trip together in June, which Petito documented on YouTube. On Aug. 12, police in Moab, Utah spoke with the couple after someone witnessed a dispute between them, calling 911 to report that he saw Laundrie chasing and slapping Petito.
They left the scene in, but were subsequently pulled over by police. Police spoke with each of them separately and both spoke of an increased amount of tension in their relationship. Laundrie had several scratches on his face from Petito hitting him, he told officers. He then “grabbed her face and pushed her back,” according to a police report of the incident obtained by Oxygen.com.
Petito's last confirmed contact with her family was on Aug. 25 while the couple were camping in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. Her family reported her missing on Sept. 11 after not hearing from her. By that point, Laundrie had actually been home in North Port, Florida for 10 days, returning Sept. 1, according to authorities. Neither he nor his family would speak with police about Petito when approached, according to police. He was named a person of interest in Petito's disappearance Wednesday.
Laundrie’s parents reported Laundrie missing Friday, saying he never returned from a hike three days earlier. A manhunt to find the 23-year-old has since been launched at the 25,000-acre Carlton Reserve in Sarasota County.
His parents’ home in Florida was searched by the FBI on Monday.
