SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Following an autopsy performed on the body found in Bridger-Teton National Forest, Wyo., officials have confirmed the remains belong to Gabby Petito.
The Teton County coroner said the "initial determination for manner of death is homicide."
The 22-year-old went missing in late August after embarking on a cross-country journey with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, in July.
Officials stated Sunday that a body "consistent" with the description of Petito was found near her last known location.
Although investigators were unable to confirm the body belonged to Gabby, the FBI notified her family following the discovery.
Special agents from the FBI Denver field office and other law enforcement teams responded to the remote Spread Creek area where they found the human remains.
On Monday, a makeshift cross was found near the area where crews searched for Petito.
It was the same area where a video blogging family reported seeing Gabby’s white Ford Transit parked off the road.
The ground where the road had been placed showed signs of activity, including recent digging and paint marks.
Though not confirmed by officials as the spot where they believed the body was found, it was the same area that had been closed off until investigators left the scene.
During the same day, FBI and local authorities in Florida entered and searched Brian Laundrie's home.
The FBI gave no details on the search by at least a dozen law enforcement officers, but agents removed several boxes and towed away a car that neighbors said was typically used by 23-year-old Brian Laundrie’s mother.
Petito and Laundrie had been living with Laundrie's parents in North Port, Fla. prior to the planned cross-country trip where she went missing.
Brian Laundrie is also missing at this time and the search for him resumed on Tuesday.
While visiting Moab, Utah in August the couple was approached by police after a third-party caller informed police of a possible domestic dispute.
A vigil for Gabby is planned for Wednesday at Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City.
