New York Knicks center Nerlens Noel recently filed a lawsuit against Rich Paul and Klutch Sports alleging he lost $58 million in salary from 2017-20, when Paul was his agent. Paul and Klutch responded by submitting a grievance of their own claiming Noel hadn't paid $200,000 in commission on his 2020-21 contract, but now Noel's side is hitting back again.
According to SNY's Ian Begley, Noel's attorneys filed an amendment to the lawsuit. This amendment features a 2017 letter written by an attorney for Noel's former agent, Happy Walters. The letter claims that Walters got Noel a four-year, $70 million deal from the Dallas Mavericks in 2017, but Paul/Klutch sabotaged it and got Noel to leave Walters for them before ultimately signing a $4.1 million qualifying offer.
There was allegedly a statement made that Noel could get an even bigger deal if he left Walters for Paul. Of course, that didn't happen, with Noel suffering through an injury-plagued 2017-18 season. He then played on bargain-bin deals for the next three seasons.
The complaint alleges that the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers were interested in Noel in recent off-seasons, but Paul didn't return calls. It also alleges that Paul played little part in Noel's previous contract with New York and that the agent advised him on offers that never came.
The veteran big man signed a three-year contract worth nearly $28 million with the Knicks this offseason. This came after Noel played a key role in the run to the playoffs for New York.
