Thousands of West Virginians got the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.
Many who Eyewitness News spoke with previously citied a few reasons why they chose that particular brand. For some, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was more appealing because it was only one dose, and also because it was created in a more traditional way, using a vector similar to the flu shot.
Many were waiting on the announcement that the second dose is effective, and so far the data shows a second dose is 94% effective against COVID-19.
Distribution is ready to begin once the second dose is approved.
Dr. Elizabeth Brown explained patients continue to come in asking for the J&J shot, and she is ready to give out the second dose once approved.
"As the news rolls out, as the FDA gives its blessing we are ready," she said. "We have vials ready to go. In fact, I had a patient, right now who had her first dose of J&J in March, and she’s chomping on the bit to get that second dose when it becomes available."
J&J previously shared data that showed the one dose shot was effective eight months after after the initial dose.
The company has now provided data to the FDA to help make decisions on booster shots.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 14. 8 million Americans have received the J&J vaccine.
