Halo Infinite is handling player progression far differently from any previous game in the series by removing per-match XP and instead focusing solely on a battle pass at launch. There will be no separate XP progression system for outside of the battle pass, meaning players who do no purchase the battle pass will have no sense of progression in the multiplayer.

343 Industries has received criticism for this from many players and as a result are actively exploring giving players new avenues for a feeling of progression in the multiplayer.

"We have heard community feedback around wanting more progression options including things like 'match XP' to feed into the battle pass and an entirely separate, incremental system along the lines of earning SR152 in Halo 5: Guardians," 343 Industries said in the September edition of Inside Infinite. "Expanding multiplayer progression offering is something the team is actively exploring, and we look forward to continuing to evolve the experience in future seasons post-launch."

Halo Infinite's battle pass is similar to those seen in other games in many ways, but has a few key differences that may have a huge impact on the feel of player progression. Similar to other games' battle passes, Halo Infinite's will have an abundance of cosmetic content alongside some consumables such as XP boosts and challenge rerolls.

But one key difference with Halo Infinite's battle pass is that they will never expire, meaning players can make progress on a pass from any season. On top of this every tier of the 100-tier battle pass requires the same, consistent amount of XP to unlock. For example, tier two of the battle pass will require the same amount of XP as tier 92.

In addition to the seasonal battle pass Halo Infinite will also include special limited-time event passes. These passes are free and only available during specified time periods. They will also have rewards, but they will be more specific and typically tied to a certain unique armor for the given event.
