Darrell J. “D.J.” Moore

CUNNINGHAM — Darrell J. “D.J.” Moore, 84, passed away Sept. 19, 2021, at his farm home near Penalosa, Kan. He was born to Otis R. and Gladys M. (Boyd) Moore on Nov. 2, 1936, at Kingman, Kan. He grew to manhood on the family farm and that is also where he spent the last 30 years of his life. He married Patricia Shrauner on July 8, 1962, at Elkhart, Kan. They shared 59 years of happy adventures.

He attended the local one room school, graduated from Cunningham High School, Pratt Junior College, Southwestern College at Winfield, Kan., and earned his Master’s Degree as an Audio-Visual Specialist at the University of Connecticut. He was awarded a summer National Foundation grant to Temple University in Philadelphia, Penn. after only a few years of teaching. 

He taught Junior High School science in Hoisington, Kan., for 17 years before he became the High School Librarian for 10 years. Meanwhile, he continued his life-long farming interests in Kingman and Reno counties. 

He was an active 59 year member of First United Methodist Church of Hoisington, Kan., where he and his wife sponsored the church youth group for several years at two different times. He served as Finance Chairman, Chairman of the Board, Chairman of Nominations as well as various other assignments. He was a regular attendee of Penalosa United Methodist Church during the farming season. 

Survivors include, his wife Patricia Moore of the home; and one son, Brett Moore of rural Kingman, Kan. He was preceded in death by infant twins, Phillip J. and Peggy K. Moore; his parents; a brother, Otis Junior Moore; and a sister, Marcelene Moore. He had a step mother, Mildred Moore a few years after his mother’s death who is also deceased. 

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2021, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, with family to receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Sept. 23, 2021, at Sego Cemetery, rural Reno county, with Ron Bailey presiding. Take Kansas Hwy 11 between US-54 and Arlington, Kan. Turn east on Pretty Prairie Rd. for 2 miles, then 1 mile North and ½ mile West on the north side.
