An Auburn, Washington mother got her newborn baby back after someone stole her SUV outside a business, KOMO reports.

The incident happened Monday afternoon (September 20) when the mother stopped at a furniture store in the 1000 block of Auburn Way South, according to Auburn Police. Officers say she went inside to use the restroom and left her 2007 Cadillac Escalade SUV running.

That's when an unknown man got inside the vehicle and drove off with the baby inside.

“The fact that this became an abduction situation, this is something they don’t take lightly so they were working really hard to figure out where this vehicle went and how they could get the baby back safely,” Kolby Crossley with the Auburn Police Department said.

Officers chased the suspect through a Maple Valley neighborhood full of children, reporters say, and some neighbors feared he was going to hit the kids.

The suspect reportedly hit a dead end and abandoned both the car and the newborn. Police were able to catch the suspect and arrest him.

Authorities said he was taken to the hospital after the arrest, and he will face charges.

During KOMO's broadcast, the mom said she was relieved to be reunited with her child. Footage shows her being surrounded by officers as she took the baby out of the car and later cradled it.
