Ben Roethlisberger has injured left pectoral; Davis Mills to start for Texans on Thursday: NFL news roundup

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has an injured left pec, Mike Tomlin told reporters on Tuesday.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Steelers have been dealing with several injuries in the wake of their 26-17 loss to the Raiders in Week 2. T.J. Watt and Diontae Johnson left the game with groin and knee injuries, respectively.

Then on Tuesday in his press conference, Mike Tomlin told reporters including Aditi Kinkhabwala of the NFL Network that Ben Roethlisberger has a left pec injury. The injury will impact how Roethlisberger prepares for the Steelers’ Week 3 matchup vs. the Bengals.

Brooke Pryor of ESPN tweeted out a list of the Steelers who are dealing with nagging injuries heading into Week 3. Among those injured is defensive lineman Tyson Alualu, who was placed on injured reserve on Monday with an ankle fracture.

Tomlin said he wasn’t sure exactly when the injury happened.

Roethlisberger was sacked just twice against the Raiders but was hit 10 times.

Davis Mills starts for Texans vs. Panthers

Houston is making the quick turnaround from playing in Cleveland on Sunday to hosting the Panthers on Thursday night, but will not have starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor available.

Coach David Culley told reporters including ESPN’s Sarah Barshop on Tuesday that rookie third-round pick Davis Mills will start on Thursday night. Taylor left Sunday’s 31-21 loss to the Browns with a hamstring injury and did not play in the second half.

Mills played the whole second half and completed eight of 18 passes for 102 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Culley said that Deshaun Watson will still be inactive and that the team might bring up Jeff Driskel from the practice squad to back up Mills.

Week 2′s most bizarre stat

Almost each week in the NFL, something happens that you may have never seen before. Week 2 of 2021 was no different.

CBS Sports.com’s Jeff Kerr tweeted on Tuesday that Week 2 was the first time in the 21st century that there were no coaches challenges. NFL Director of Football Data and Analytics Michael Lopez added that in 32 games, there have been only three total challenges.

The NFL first allowed coaches to challenge calls back in 1999.
