The traffic circle is being placed at the intersection to improve traffic safety and flow.

A roundabout is coming to Fayetteville's Camden Road and Whitfield Street intersection, according the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The 80-foot, $278,100 circle is supposed to help with the area's traffic flow and safety, according to NCDOT's website.

Historically, the intersection has seen its fair share of traffic accidents.

The announcement of its incoming placement follows 24 accidents between October 2013 and August 2018. None of those crashes resulted in fatalities, according to a crash report, and only one resulted in serious injury. NCDOT spokesman Andrew Barksdale said 11 of the crashes were due to drivers running the stop signs.

A map of the project shows that in addition to the concrete circle, islands will be built in all oncoming lanes heading into the circle. Sidewalks and crosswalks will also be added.

On Monday, progress was made to slow down traffic when stop signs were added to the intersection to make it so cars had to stop coming from all directions.

NDOT officials didn't immediately provide a timeline for when the intersection will be closed for construction, or what alternate routes drivers should take during that time period.

According to the website, construction on the circle is anticipated to begin October 2022. It should be complete early the following year, DOT spokesman Andrew Barksdale said Tuesday.
