BUTLER, Pa. — An off-duty probation officer stopped a stabbing attack that occurred in broad daylight on Monday in Butler.

The incident occurred in the 300 block of South Main Street, Butler, shortly before 2 p.m.

Police said several 911 calls were made for a man who was stabbed, and when officers arrived they found a 40-year-old Butler man who was bleeding from various wounds to his chest, hands and neck. He was taken to Butler Hospital where he was treated and released.

Police said the attack was stopped by an off-duty Butler County probation officer who witnessed part of the attack. Lenzi and the victim had no previous relationship and this seemed to be an unprovoked attack, police said.

At the scene, police said Paul Lenzi, 68, of Butler was found covered in blood and seated on the ground. Witnesses identified him as the suspect and he was arrested without incident.

Lenzi was charged with felony attempted homicide and aggravated assault, and is being held in the Butler County Jail on $250,000 bail.

The victim’s friend told Channel 11 they are still very shaken up.

“The guy was trying to go for the throat but... the instinct was just to get his hands up, try to block everything. So both hands are bandaged up, got stitches and stuff yesterday at Butler hospital,” David Facemire said.
