The 2022 Toyota Tundra pickup, introduced Sunday in Texas, is making its auto show debut this week during Motor Bella at M1 Concourse. The announcement was made during a press briefing this morning at the Pontiac facility.
“We’re excited to show the all-new 2022 Tundra in person for the first time at Motor Bella,” says Joe Moses, general manager of Toyota marketing, vehicle marketing and communications at Toyota Motor North America. “This truck was redesigned from the ground up to deliver exceptional performance, amazing capability, next-level multimedia and retain the quality, reliability and durability for which Toyota trucks are known.”
The new Tundra was redesigned from the ground up, Toyota says. Designed, engineered, and assembled in the U.S., the pickup will go on sale later this year.
Improvements and enhancements include its new high-strength boxed, steel-ladder frame, aluminum-reinforced composite bed, and fully redesigned multi-link rear suspension. It has a maximum towing capacity of up to 12,000 pounds and a max payload capacity of 1,940 pounds.
Tundra will offer two different powerplant configurations. A new, twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 engine produces up to 389 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. of torque alone. When paired with a bell-housing motor system called the i-FORCE MAX, the result is a combined performance output of 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft. of torque. Both configurations will be mated to a new 10-speed automatic transmission.
A new interior will offer an available panoramic roof, heated and ventilated front seats, rear sunshade, heated steering wheel, and more. New tech features are found throughout Tundra as well, such as towing aids, off-road enhancements, an all-new multimedia system featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and over-the-air updates. Two different four-door layouts are available, as well as various bed lengths including a 5.5-foot bed, 6.5-foot bed and an 8.1-foot bed.
In addition to the new Tundra, Toyota’s Motor Bella presence includes an exhibit-style staging area for an array of new products, all built in the United States. Vehicles highlighted include the new Corolla Cross, Corolla sedan, Camry TRD, Avalon TRD, RAV4 Hybrid, Highlander, Sequoia, Sienna, a Christopher Bell NASCAR Cup Series race car, and a retired trophy truck driven by Baja legend Ivan “Ironman” Stewart.
