New York Giants fans are a rough bunch. When things aren’t going well for the team, they’ll boo, turn their backs and walk out of the stadium. They also tend to be extremely vocal on social media.

But are they among the most negative? Are they a fair-weather fan base?

A recent analysis by the World Sports Network sought to determine exactly that. And their results? Well, let’s just say it’s not going to be met well by Giants fans.

Using an analytic tool called SentiStrength, which “measures the tone of a short piece of text and categorizes it as either positive, neutral, or negative,” WSN concluded that Giants fans are among the most fair-weather and least supportive following a loss. The analysis was based on postgame comments made on each team’s official Facebook page.

The analysis reveals that the Giants see a +39% negative reaction when the team loses a game. In total, the negative response is 48% following a defeat. Even after a win, the negative response is 28% — more than any other team in the bottom 10 of the analysis (and among the worst overall).

WSN determined that Giants fans are among the most consistently negative in the NFL. Only nine teams had fans rank worse than Giants fans overall, but none of those nine teams’ fan bases had more a negative reaction following a win than New York’s.

Giants fans were also among the league’s lowest in terms of neutral reactions. They usually pick a side (positive or negative) and dig in their heels. There is very little in between.

WSN determined that fans of the Washington Football Team are the most negative following a loss and the most consistently negative overall.

According to the analysis, the most consistently positive fans belong to the Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos. None of the NFC East fan bases were in the top 10 (three were in the bottom 10 — only Philadelphia Eagles fans were not listed).

On the plus side, Giants fans are not among the bottom 10 when factoring in all major American sports — just football.
