Bobby Ryan is back for another year with the Red Wings. Well, he might be.

The Wings signed Ryan to a professional tryout Tuesday with training camp starting Thursday, where the 14-year vet will have a chance to make the team.

Ryan signed a one-year deal with Detroit last year and won over the locker room with his positivity and work ethic. He got off to a hot start with four goals in his first three games, before cooling off and then missing the final month of the season with a triceps injury. He finished with 14 points in 33 games.

There's a path for Ryan to crack Detroit's roster in camp. He's a right-shot forward who can play in the top six and on the power play, and the Wings only have one right-shot forward in Sam Gagner who's a lock to make the team. In that regard, Ryan will be competing for a job with 2020 fourth overall pick and fellow winger Lucas Raymond.

2018 first-rounder Joe Veleno, who played five games for the Wings last season, and 2018 second-rounder Jonatan Berggren, who's coming off a breakout season in the Swedish Hockey League, will vie for roster spots as well.

The Wings have five forwards penciled into their top six in Dylan Larkin, Tyler Bertuzzi, Jakub Vrana, Filip Zadina and Robby Fabbri. Trade acquisition Pius Suter, one of three players Jeff Blashill said he's eager to watch in camp, is also in the mix.
