EAR ME OUT

My wife got our two-month-old daughter’s ears pierced behind my back, I took them out, now she says I’m disrespectful

A DAD has asked whether he overreacted when his wife got his baby daughter’s ears pierced behind his back, and in retaliation, he removed the earrings and threw them in the bin.

Most parents make major decisions together, talking things through and coming to an agreement as a couple. However, one new dad has taken to Reddit to share how his wife went rogue and knowingly went against his wishes to pierce his daughter’s ears.

The dad was furious after he saw his daughter's ears

In a now-viral post, the angry dad explained: “My wife and I have a two-month-old daughter, Alicia. We’ve been having the piercing debate since before she was born.

“She comes from a culture where it’s the normal thing, but I’m just not comfortable with a painful process like that and would prefer to wait until she’s older so she can choose whether to go through that for herself.

He then explained that his wife had taken Alicia out for the day with her family, and when she returned he’d immediately noticed a pair of gold studs in his baby daughter's ears.

His wife argued that she had chosen to “make a day of it” and went ahead and got them pierced, despite the fact that the couple were still debating it.

The devastated dad explained: “I felt pure rage and immediately removed the earrings and threw them away.

"This enraged my wife and she said removing them was ‘totally disrespectful’. She got them pierced without asking me (or more importantly, ASKING ALICIA).

"So I took them out because our baby doesn’t need bits of metal sticking out of her ears.”

Since the blowout argument, his wife has been sleeping in the spare room, leading the concerned dad to ask Reddit if he overreacted.

Many people raised concerns about the situation, with worries about piercing tiny growing ears to concerns about consent.

The main issue that many commented on was, of course, the fact that the mum went behind her husband’s back, despite knowing how he felt about it.

One user commented: “Your wife knew your feelings on this and did it behind your back as a ‘better to ask for forgiveness than permission’ move.”

Another added: “Whether or not anyone here agrees or disagrees with the morality of getting a babies [sic] ears pierced, the problem is that the mom went behind dad’s back about something they couldn’t agree on. It was a big deal to the dad.”

A third parent commented: “One of the most important lessons you can teach your daughter is that her autonomy is important.”
