Olympic gold medalist Madison Wilson says she's been hospitalized after getting COVID-19

Madison Wilson, an Australian swimmer who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics and competes for a Los Angeles professional swimming team, announced she is in the hospital with COVID-19.

Wilson made the announcement on Instagram on Sunday she wouldn't be able to compete for the Los Angeles Current's recent meet in the International Swimming League in Italy as she was taken to a hospital "for further care and observation."

Wilson said she is double vaccinated against COVID, yet is someone who has experienced a breakthrough infection of the virus, which has occurred as the delta variant of the virus emerged.

In her time in Tokyo, Wilson competed in three events, winning gold in the women's 4x100 freestyle and bronze in the 4x200 freestyle. Less than two weeks ago, she won the 100 and 200 freestyle for the Current.

Australia's Madison Wilson competes in the final of the women's 4x200m freestyle relay swimming event during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre in Tokyo on July 29, 2021.

She said even though she took the right precautions, she believes being, "run down physically and mentally" made her more susceptible to falling ill with the virus. She described her experience as a "wake up call."

"Covid is a serious thing and when it comes it hits very hard. I’d be stupid not to say I wasn’t scared. I’m so lucky for all my family, friends and support people. I can’t believe how much love I have been shown and I’m forever in debt to these people," she wrote.

Yahoo! Sports reported Wilson said she has "underlying chest and lung issues" and the vaccine protected her from developing worse symptoms.

The 27-year-old also posted a message sent to her from the Los Angeles teammates.

"Special thanks to my incredible LA family, you haven’t and wont ever see a team with a bigger heart then theirs, away from the pool the most incredible compassionate group of people and in the pool we are fighting with every bit of strength," Wilson wrote. "I’m taking some time to rest and I’m sure I’ll be ready to bounce back in no time."
