Report: 49ers signing RB off Bengals practice squad

The 49ers are adding some depth to their beat up running back group. NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reported San Francisco is adding former XFL running back Jacques Patrick off the Bengals’ practice squad.

Patrick, 24, stands at 6-3, 234 pounds and played his college football at Florida State. He averaged 4.9 yards per carry on 366 attempts across four years with the Seminoles.

The Tampa Bay Vipers of the XFL drafted Patrick in 2020. In five games for them he ran it 60 times for 254 yards and scored twice. He also caught five balls for 49 yards.

Cincinnati signed Patrick before the 2020 season, but he spent the year on their practice squad. He was released again this year at final cuts and re-signed to their practice squad.

With Elijah Mitchell’s status uncertain because of a shoulder issue, Trey Sermon in concussion protocol and JaMycal Hasty sidelined by a high ankle sprain, Patrick could get a legitimate shot at his first regular-season carries when the 49ers face the Packers on Sunday Night Football.
